the future of #dms will be won on #humanfactors expertise, and the ability of the #driver #monitoring #algorithms to see and understand human behavior. the rise of partial automation (hands-off/l2/l2+) has fooled #oems into commoditizing the dms procurement process into the cheapest solution for the job. but #handsoff systems operate mostly on divided highways, where the human is simply required to have eyes open and be watching the road ahead. a dms can achieve this with head pose and eye tracking, using #perclos to measure eye opening. adding #kss for basic drowsiness monitoring gives dms 101. hence the race to the bottom.
then euro #ncap moved the focus onto human factors. the 2023 tests required oems to measure drowsiness and visual distraction. drowsiness can be measured from the steering wheel, or using perclos/kss. so far, so good. but we are starting to see epic fails of dms in real-world conditions in reviews from motoring journalists, which are calling out dms as distracting and infuriating. two examples:
#volvo #ex30 (https://lnkd.in/errsn2pd)
#mitsubishi #triton (https://lnkd.in/efm7bvdz)
what went wrong?
the problem is distraction algorithms that don't understand human behavior. there are many reasons why a driver may turn their head when driving, some of which indicate distraction and some of which don't. we didn't see this issue in early l2/l2+ systems because of the odd, but we are now because of ncap.
the problems will get worse before they get better, with a lot of cheap and poorly performing dms still set to hit the market to comply with gsr, gbt. ncap could introduce cognitive distraction testing for 2026, so oems may get regulatory compliance and a 5* ncap ratings, but will infuriate their customers in the process.
the issue will spread next to china. shown is the #avatr 12, with a lovely futuristic digital ****pit, dms in the a pillar and #oms in the ohc. but dms in china is dominated by surveillance companies, not specialist automotive dms suppliers. so the introduction by c-ncap of distraction testing could result in the same problems seen in europe, with infuriating dms. we may also see the same in the us, as #nhtsa introduces distraction monitoring as part of #impaired driving legislation.
most likely is the dms market sees consolidation of suppliers as ncap and regulation sort the winners and losers. the most important #kpi will be human factors expertise and the ability to truly understand human behavior behind the wheel. oems need to urgently add that to their procurement process.
