Well, after all these arguments, it does seem that nothing can make the SP going up, then why waste money on buy backs? Why not just keep them to strengthen the balance sheet instead, if not paying special dividend?
In fact there are many other companies doing share buy backs as well, but not many were successful in helping to push their SP up. Such as VODAFONE, they are doing share buy backs too, but its SP has never stop falling. It even touched 69p last week!
The only thing share buy backs can do is to save the dividend payments on those bought back and cancelled shares, which is about Β£200+million a year. But the buy backs cost Β£4b, that will take almost 20 years to get them back, lol.
