RE: Viktor note - Concedes Volvo26 Feb 2020 12:11
Viktor trying hard to knock SEE, but cant even convince himself. Apparently he thinks having a lower cost Chip and partnering with Qualcomm is a negative....
"We are optimistic about Smart Eye’s business model, and believe its merits have been proven
lately by especially the won designs of 2019. Main competitor Seeing Machines (SEE) has not
won any new OEMs during the past year.
SEE appears to have started modifying its business
model. We see some early tendencies that SEE is moving towards a model that resembles
the one of Smart Eye. Firstly, During the CMD, in November, SEE announced a modified
partnership with Xilinx, where Xilinx will take over the role of supplying the Fovio chip directly
to tier-1 customers. SEE also focused a suprising amount of the CMD on other issues than
DMS, although that could be just a co-incidence.
The second data point of interest is the Qualcomm partnership announced at CES where the
two parties “have been working together to optimize the Seeing Machines driver monitoring
platform technology for the Snapdragon Autonomous Platform architecture and its very
capable acceleration hardware.” This is a noteworthy exception from the previous all Xilinx
hardware route.
We continue to expect cutthroath competition from SEE, but we are a bit
puzzled by the tweaking of the business model and strategy this late in the processes. We
have seen previous examples in the industry of unsuccessful business model pivots (e.g.
from license to chip) that were not well-rooted among customers/end customers, and
consequently failed, only to be reversed.
All in all, we cannot distill what is the chicken and egg in the equation, i.e. if there are no wins
due to the revisions of the model, or if the RFQ outcomes propelled the changes. The above is
just wild speculation, but if there is something to it, Smart Eye might have the upper hand in
some of the current RFQs, e.g. Volkswagen. It could possibly even become relevant for the
second gen. DMS for SEE’s customer GM, which is something we have not considered
before.
Nevertheless, we want to once again emphasize that SEE is a fierce competitor,
preferred by e.g. Veoneer."
