Muhammad Yunus, may not want to use their own coal, but sometimes as many other leaders around the world have found out, you have to forgo your personal views for the sake of your country, and it’s not always about what you personally believe or want, that happens. It’s about reality, and the reality is that Bangladesh has factory’s that are closing daily due to the power shortage which is putting even more strain on the country, especially the garment industry. Their reserves are running low, their debts and loans are growing daily, their interest repayments by themselves are massive and also growing, and they have built coal power stations that they cannot afford to just close, that need feeding which are now running out of coal because they cannot afford to import it…

Imo, they are being backed into a corner and are running out of time and options, and will have little choice but to opt for mining Phulbari, and if you did not believe that you would not still be here wasting time posting imo…

That’s called passing the buck … lol, but at least questions are being asked!!

Finance and Commerce Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed has said that it will take some time for the electricity situation in the country to normalize.

He made this statement in response to questions from journalists at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

He said: “The government is working to address the electricity shortage. We are giving priority to importing fuel and coal to meet this shortage.”

when they say it will take sometime for the energy situation to normalise, I guess what they really mean is, it will take a couple of years, because buy that time we will be mining our own coal from Phulbari 😉

Wow… one of the pumps has been out of action since 2022….. you could not make it up!!

“Chief Engineer Abu Bakr Siddiq said that the unit that shut down yesterday was the last operational unit of the power plant. Each of the three units requires two electro-hydraulic oil pumps to function, which supply oil to the units for power generation. Since 2022, one of the pumps in the third unit remained out of service, and the plant was running depending on a single pump, leading to operational risks. Despite repeated notifications to the contractor, the problems remained unresolved.”

Compared to last month, idle power capacity due to fuel shortage has increased further.

PDB officials are pinning the blame for frequent power cuts on insufficient electricity generation by the coal-based power plants due to various technical issues.

At least 10,000MW of generation capacity is sitting idle due to fuel shortage or maintenance: 6,300MW for fuel shortage and 3,600MW for maintenance.

The Matarbari power plant is also producing less than its capacity due to coal shortage, while one of the two units of Chattogram's SS power plant is under maintenance.

At present, about 2,300MW -- or one-third of the total coal power capacity of 6,604MW -- remains idle, according to data from PDB.

I don’t know what any one is worrying about 🙄

This power overdue is a part of the overall energy crisis of Bangladesh. The country’s power related debts have reached USD 3.7 billion.

I know that I keep on saying it, but Phulbari has to get a mention soon……………….

And then reality hits, and they realise that they can physically not supply the country with enough energy in the form that they would like!!!

Well they may not want to, but coal is now going to become a very hot topic, and they are going to be forced into a position where they decide what they are going to do going forward!!

I read the tea leaves mate, and being that its Chinese tradition i took more notice of them than the bones hahahahaha

YouKnowItsRight, there is no way that it is going to be years before any decisions will be made, or until elections will be held imo. The BNP and other political party’s may be on board at the moment, but it won’t be much longer before the start putting real pressure on the interim government to announce an election date!

You only have to look at the press reports to see what a mess their energy situation is in and how it is getting worse by the day especially now that all of the corruption is being uncovered, and on top of that, what a mess the financial situation is within the country, they now find themselves in the situation where they can’t pay for the power and fuel they have already had, never mind buying more in the future….

Now I agree, they may not want to make a decision yet, but day by day, week by week they are backing themselves into a corner, and that space imho is getting tighter and tighter to the degree where they are soon going to either announce that the country is going to have to look at using its own mineral resources, coal included, or announce that they are in discussion with Power China and GCM …

Lets see how the next few weeks / months turn out …

Looks like these contracts with Adani are finally being called into question……

“Yunus’s government blames opaque, expensive infrastructure deals negotiated under Sheikh Hasina for tipping the country of 170mn into a financial hole,” the report added.

“Among the most contentious was the deal with Adani, owned by Asia’s second-richest man Gautam Adani, to supply coal power from its 1,600-megawatt Godda plant in India,” it added.

The FT also talked to Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, the energy adviser of the interim government. He acknowledged that Bangladesh is late on paying $492mn to Adani, to whom it owes as much as $800mn in total. The country also faced a total power liabilities of $3.7bn as of the middle of last week, the adviser added.

The FT report also mentioned that Bangladesh is the world’s second-largest garments exporter and has grown rapidly in recent years but has suffered chronic energy shortages due to falling domestic gas reserves.
