The interim government's sincerity and urgency to respond to the emerging issues will make a difference. Any short-term answer to the problems involving production, supply and distribution of power should be part of a long-term strategy to rid the sector of its deeply ingrained ills. The long-term approach, as often stressed by well-meaning people and experts, should be to exploit the country's own potential reserves of gas and other fossil fuels.

The present problem of the power sector arises out of a lack of fuels to run power plants and the shortage of foreign currency to import those. But these problems could be avoided if the country's power sector was not fully made dependent on fuel import that eats up the lion's share of the hard currency that the country earns from remittances and exports.

There is no way that Yunus will or can keep on ignoring these bills for imported energy, and therefore, he will know that although he may not want to do it, he has little choice but to explore and use the countries own gas and coal resources....

Looks like this story is hitting quite a lot of the press, and the shouting is only going to get louder as power plants close due to lack of coal and the load shedding increases .......

With Yunus at this meeting, if he hasn’t already, he will be sitting up listening to the business leaders of the country, which it seems, many are now calling for using own coal….

Knowing its importance, let’s see if Yunus acts on this as fast as he has with many other issues that he has been presented with since the Interim Government came to power….

Matarbari Power Plant not getting payment against power supply to national grid

Coal and oil shortage

Adani's power plant in Jharkhand is expected to provide 1,500 MW of electricity daily. However, the plant's outstanding electricity bill has surpassed approximately Tk9,500 crore, with nearly Tk5,900 crore of this amount being overdue.

While it is crucial to investigate why Hasina accumulated so much debt with Adani, it's equally important to examine why she agreed to such a high-priced contract in the first place. Was she pressured by India, or did she do it voluntarily for her own benefit?

Whatever the reason, Adani and Co. are now demanding payment, and the delay in settling the bill is affecting coal imports for the plant, causing its production to drop to 1,000 MW.

The supply from Tripura, India, has also dropped, with only 60-90 MW being delivered per hour instead of the expected 160 MW.

Though 1,000 MW was expected from India's public and private sectors via the Bheramara link, only 880 MW is currently being received.

The Matarbari power plant is also facing difficulties in purchasing coal due to import challenges.

Top member of Dhaka interim govt says Adani power deal under scrutiny

THE INTERIM government of Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, is set to scrutinise Indian businesses including the Adani Group which exports power from its Jharkhand unit under a 2017 agreement.

More specifically, the interim government is keen to know the terms of the agreement and if the price being paid for power is justified.

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday said the Election Commission, once fully constituted, is expected to formally begin its work on October 1 and they expect it to be completed within the next three months.

“Based on the Commission's report, the government will hold consultations with major political parties at the next stage,” he said adding that at the final stage, the outline of reform ideas will be finalised on the basis of a three-to-seven-day long consultation meeting with students, civil society, representatives of political parties and representatives of the government.
