Maintaining law and order for 40 days key to fair election: DMP Commissioner

DHAKA, Jan 3, 2025 (BSS) – Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali today said a fair national election would be possible if law and order can be maintained in next 40 days.

Speaking at the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh’s best reporting award ceremony at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), he said the crime situation in Dhaka is currently under control and the upcoming February 12 election is the police’s top priority.

Post-poll worry grips Jamaat, reaches out to BNP seeking new political understanding

A month before the highly anticipated general elections in Bangladesh , Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman said the party wants to continue working with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) “in the national interest”. According to Bangladeshi news outlet BD News, the Jamaat leader noted that he was seeking talks with former PM late Khaleda Zia’s party after the elections but before the formation of the next government.

The remarks came while he was speaking at the BNP’s Gulshan office on Thursday evening during a condolence visit following the funeral of chairperson Zia.

During his visit, Shafiqur also met Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and other senior party leaders. After the meeting, the Jamaat chief shared his take on the election and referendum, urging a smooth, fair, and credible electoral process.

Bangladesh's BNP set for political boost in wake of Khaleda Zia's death

BNP moves to finalise candidates for Khaleda’s seats

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed yesterday said alternative candidates nominated by the party for the three constituencies allocated to chairperson Khaleda Zia would become the official BNP candidates if their nominations pass scrutiny.

He also said there is no legal scope to suspend or defer the election following her death.

Khaleda was nominated by BNP for three constituencies -- Dinajpur-3, Feni-1 and Bogura-7 -- in the upcoming 13th parliamentary election.

Bangladesh today welcomed China's reaffirmation that the country's general election is an internal matter, appreciating Beijing's goodwill and confidence in Bangladesh's interim government and its people to hold a smooth and orderly poll.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Dhaka deeply values the cordial relations between the two countries, which have gained further momentum under the interim government.

The foreign ministry also reiterated Bangladesh's firm adherence to the "One China Principle," underscoring its consistent foreign policy position.

On Wednesday in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian said Bangladesh's general election is an internal affair of the country and that China upholds the principle of non-interference in other countries' internal affairs.

He expressed confidence that the interim government and the people of Bangladesh are capable of managing their own affairs and pursuing a development path suited to national conditions.

The spokesperson also voiced hope that Bangladesh would hold a smooth general election and advance its political agenda in an orderly manner.

Bangladesh solar power projects fail to draw investors for rigid terms: Study

I do think that sometimes people have very short memories, or just post negative thoughts just for the sake of their positions…

BUT for a quick recap…

- Back in February 2025 at the coal seminar held in Bangladesh, the Interim governments energy advisor stated that own coal resources, and specifically mentioned Phulbari open pit mining should be used, and that the Interim government would be doing work in the background so that it would be ready for the new government to implement should they wish when they come to power….

- The BNP in their manifesto have already stated that the countries own minerals should be used, and remembering the past, it was the BNP that was previously going to give the green light to Phulbari.

- The Jamaat party in their last manifesto also stated that the countries own coal should be used…

So now we wait for the elections on the 12th Feb, and see if as expected the BNP win, although from their previous manifestos it really should not matter to GCM, who does win, and in the meantime, we wait for the much anticipated new Energy Roadmap, to see what work and recommendations the Interim government make to using own coal, which should come out at any time ….

Great, so our old friend Phulbari has returned with some quite ridiculous statements this morning imho… Great timing Phulbari, two posts, and then know one hears from you for the rest of the day, knowing what reaction your post would create, I hope you got your order filled, or were you posting just for your ego?

In reality, Bangladesh and its people would be in a much better place today if the project had been given the green light back in 2006, but greed and corruption got in the way. Thankfully though, the country has now moved on, and with the new elections in February hopefully comes a new Bangladesh!

For you to even think about comparing the situation in Bangladesh today as being the same as in 2006 is crazy and wrong!

Let’s just look at a few key points ..

It was the BNP that originally gave the green light for Phulbari, before the protests and sad shootings, and was then Hasina who cancelled it. The country was in a very different place in 2006 than it finds its self today, with Bara closing in the next couple of years, gas running out, debt within the country rising to an unmanageable level, the energy situation not improving, and with LOT’S of promises being made by the two main parties, BNP and Jamaat, about how they are going to change the country’s future should they win the election, and how in the coming years Bangladesh is going to be the hive of Asia…. All of this takes electricity and lots of it……

Let’s just hope that your two posts today did not encourage sellers, and that they were going to sell anyway, because IF, over the next few days we get / see the Energy Roadmap announced and, in any way, as we expect it mentions “own coal” and especially if it mentions “Phulbari coal” or the renewal of the PowerChina MoU announced, I suspect the SP will be in a very different place, and they may be regretting their decision.

Let’s see what the coming days / weeks bring, but I personally expect a far better outlook than the poster Phulbari is suggesting ……..
