According to sources from the Ministry of Health and the Planning Commission, the total cost for the construction of this hospital is estimated to be Tk 22.92 billion. Of this, the Chinese government will give a grant of Tk 22.19 billion, with the remaining Tk 730 million provided by the government.

We all know statements that have been made about coal usage and using the countries own resources previously, but with the BNP predicted to win the election by a landslide, let’s bring this right up to date with a few highlights and statements that have 100% been made by the BNP and Bangla press over the past few weeks!

• BNP have said that Coal will continue to be in the energy mix for the foreseeable future

• BNP have said that they will be implementing Teesta River project, we all know the thoughts on Teesta and Phulbari being connected.

• The Energy Master Plan by the Interim Government has been released, although not the full details yet, this recommends that the incoming government should use own coal and be less dependent on imports of coal.

• The Energy Master Plan suggests that Bangladesh has a capacity of around 30,000MW currently, and that coal makes up 21% of the energy mix. The suggestion is that if Bangladesh has the growth expected, this could rise to the country needing the capacity of 70,000MW by 2050, and that coal will then be around 15% of the energy mix!

• This is a massive increase in coal usage, and while they try to reduce imports, this indicates a huge increase in the use of "own coal"

• What ever some green campaigners say, Phulbari is the only mine in the country ready to go and could be producing coal within 3 years, other mines discovered are still years away from being used!

• PowerChina have recently renewed their MoU / EPC overburden contract for 1 Billion.

• This means that if GCM gets the green light it has got a massive instant income from the overburden, and quite handy that Teesta River project will be given the green light, so has an instant market.

I’m sure I’ve missed many other positives that are going on at the moment, feel free to add.

All I know is that imho this is now closer than it’s ever been, and with the elections not that far away, on the 12th Feb, and more and more details about the various party’s energy plans being released daily, this is really starting to get very exciting….

Obviously because of what the BNP have already said about the development in the north, it’s going to be interesting to hear Tarique’s speech when he campaigns in this area and see how he expands this and the BNP promises are for the area ….

So, at the moment Bangladesh have a capacity of around 30,000 MW’s, and from reading this article, if they achieve the high GDP growth that is expected by 2050, the capacity will need to grow to around 70,000 MW’s.

At the moment coal currently accounts for about 21% of the energy mix, and if the high GDP growth is achieved that they expect by 2050 then coal is expected to have a 15% of the energy mix …

Do the sums…. That’s a massive increase in coal that they are going to need…

Just as well Phulbari is the only mine ready to go 😊

The BNP can't be far behind, so i's expect either later today, or over the weekend, that we should start to hear their manifesto as well...

Professor M. Tamim, Vice Chancellor of Independent University, Bangladesh and a leading energy expert considers that Bangladesh is now facing one of its most serious risks from the perspective of energy security. He feels that the global energy market situation remains complex and Bangladesh needs to address the issues urgently to overcome its serious energy and investment crisis. He suggested that the next government must make clear political decisions to promote domestic oil and gas exploration, coal extraction, and renewable energy development. He further suggested that the governments' primary objective should be to create enabling investment confidence and formulate policies for bankable project implementation combining domestic and foreign initiatives.

A transition could ease Bangladesh's energy sector challenges

With the growing risk of unchecked fossil fuel import dependence, the time is ripe for Bangladesh to design and implement an evidence-based and technically sound energy policy. In doing so, the country should rely on its local experts and key stakeholders to map major energy sources while fostering the contribution of renewable energy to meet its energy demand. The policy should also recognise the instrumental role of energy efficiency and conservation in curbing unsustainable growth in energy demand.

While an updated policy vision would signal a commitment to the energy transition, the Bangladesh government should also develop a supportive ecosystem that incentivises the transition. It should rationalise the high import duties on solar panels and inverters for small-scale projects. At the same time, it should reduce import duties on components used in energy-efficient appliances.

Any further delay in the energy transition would weaken the country’s energy security, heightening the risks of higher energy costs and supply disruptions.

51 of 59 registered parties to contest, campaigning begins at midnight

The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday (January 21) said 51 of the 59 registered political parties will participate in the 13th National Parliamentary Election, with campaigning set to begin at midnight and continue until 7:30am on February 10.

The information was shared at a high-level law and order meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the Chief Adviser’s Office.

EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said observers from 26 countries have been invited, including a 300-member European Union team, with 56 EU representatives already in Bangladesh.
