Mary , compassionate use was planned in the last Faron trial , but was never carried out as it was stopped short due to the steroid business.
They would have offered the drug to patients outside of the trial group , who had the unmet medical need .
It would be given free , but the benefit , other than helping patients , would be more results back faster leading to quicker marketing approval.
I feel we may be moving into a far bigger ' compassionate' use than was planned before , and this time it will be funded by others .
I think another compassionate use is where a drug that has FDA approval for say Malaria can be given to treat a different illness , on a doctors approval , if they think it will help .
In a few days I expect we will know a lot more
