1. 4D have developed an extensive library of samples of gut bacteria from hundreds of donors.
2.The platform enables these to be identified at the single strain molecular level. This allows for the discovery of rare single strains.
3.These single strains can be further broken down to identify their specific function on different elements of the body- immune system, central nervous system, metabolism etc. This multiple functionality of single strains is different to Seres approach who look to achieve multi-functionality from a consortia of different strains. The 4D approach is potentially more stable and will give more consistent results.
4.4D scientists stress that this is a rational approach to drug discovery, thereby suggesting that other approaches such as probiotics, faecal transplants or other companies in the microbiome space are more into a hit and hope aporoach. Demonstrating functionality this way will be key to convincing regulators of their value
