Intriguing to see possible strategies being played out here.
A few days back I mentioned a news article saying that Newmont ifsuccesful in their bid may take what they want and sell off the other assets. A figures of 1.9 billion Australian dollars was mentioned for Havieron and Telfer, which was queried on these boards.
I’ve not yet been able to find that article again, but out of curiosity, I checked the exchange rates from Aus dollars to US dollars and the 1.9 billion comes in a little over a billion US dollars.
Now I take you back to the 5% saga and using the Valmin code, that 5% was calculated to be worth 60 million USdollars. Newcrests 70% would therefore be worth 14 times that at 840 million US dollars. Add in Telfer and some surrounding Patterson tenements and J/V’s and you can see where that 1 billion US dollar figure was used.
If GGP Could have got that lot for 1 billion dollars, I think every GGP shareholder would have been delighted. Shaun and our BOD sat back hoping the Newmont bid would go through and we could pick up the pieces of Havieron etc. unfortunately I can’t see them getting it at that price.
Newcrest meanwhile, have had a good think and rejected the offer, but are still open to better .offers. My guess is they are hoping for more for Havieron.
So it’s now over to Shaun to see what he and the board do next. Can they afford to sit on the sidelines and possibly see the price of Havieron soar beyond their means?
I await the next move in this fascinating chess game.
