Just to point out, 4G - or more correctly, LTE, supports voice - in the same carrier/frequency - it’s called Voice over LTE (VoLTE): one of the benefits of LTE - all IP network with voice just another data application (with specific requirements). Not that this matters - LTE/4G in to the home provides broadband over which you can have a voice service (such as Skype). Assuming you can get coverage (and it’s not congesting - then VoLTE will take precedence over the likes of Skype or WhatsApp). If you can’t get a fixed line with decent speeds and can’t get 4G (or next year 5G) then satellite would be the next option.

Well, 13.5k - over 3-5 years! - should be more than accommodated by an average company’s rate of employee churn... but then is BT average?! The world has and is moving mobile-centric but needs a backhaul network, so BT is in a strong position but it is a (super)tanker (in more ways than one) and takes time to change course... so the real question is if it will make the necessary changes given the financial pressures... alas only time can tell...

I’m on the nerdy/geek side of life, so I will never understand the marketing folks and their choice of names....The old one described what it did, but I can see it might leave people perplexed - at least the average punter knows what “broadband” refers to - and bigblu is easy (and relevant)... so maybe not so bad after all... I shall continue to watch and perhaps top up, given it’s the end of the month. Cheers!

Have to agree the new name is terrible, doesn’t sound serious enough... maybe that’s put people off and they are selling - as likely as anything else given no other news! But as nothing has happened then it should surely return to the pre-consolidation level (at some point! Haha). Sell in May and go away...? Anyone watched the price of another share that consolidated - did it dip then recover?

Import too many workers? There aren’t enough in this country - didn’t you see the headlines the other day that some have been refused work visas - including doctors and engineers. What are we saying to the world - we are closed? Anyhow, that’s way off topic. Bringing call centres back to the UK is a good thing, something EE did on its road to customer service improvement, so Marc Alera is gonna help turn things around. He is new blood that actual do things - to shift the moribund 70’s culture that is BT - epitomised by BTC. Just need to cut down the meddle managers now...

I quite agree with HarryK. I posted a link to an article from 2009 earlier too and you could go back to 2001 as well for similar headlines! It’s fascinating to see the historical perspective - sounds like something far more fundamental has to change - Openreach split off and GS paired right down? - and as we’ve been here before, then a long punt might be worth it - if there’s no where better to put your money... and it’s not talking it down, this public site of the few isn’t going to sway the large scale investors and their millions. I don’t want it to go lower (10% down myself) but what was a 6% yield isn’t at all attractive now.

Just googled. UK average is 15% - but varies, of course, by industry. If BT were normal - that more than covers 13.5k... but it ain’t a normal company at the moment, if ever... and this reduction is planned over 3 years - so 4.5k a year then, that’s jjust over 4% a year.... hmmm.

Yep, I said it: 13,500 jobs in a year - what’s the normal attrition rate in a year? 5%? There’s 5,000. These are middle management and back office posts. Whilst I wouldn’t want to face losing my job, and yes, these are people which lives and livelihoods, this is capitalism and the company ain’t doing very well, ho hum. Here’s one to echo the useful analysis presented (gambling “tactics”): past performance is not a guide to future performance. The bigger picture - no one is convinced BT management has the right strategy, sorry, any strategy. And blaming past governments and regulators is all very interesting but sounds a bit like “it’s not my fault”. Well, if it ain’t those in charge of the company, the f@#k’s fault is it? There will be a bottom and it will need wiping. Then it may go up over time. Who knows.

And BT isn’t going to disappear - perhaps chopped up and the parts that make money sold (and so will survive) - anyone want a cable/fibre business and a mobile phone network?!

Probably been said already, but the shares are now worth less than with GP took over... Question, why will it take 3 years to lose 13,500 jobs? Retirement and attrition will probably reach that amount in a year. I think the market was expecting 25k of jobs to go, and far sooner. GP - dead man walking. He’s had nearly 5 years to sort out the company.

thanks for your reply earlier. I’m a bit of a skeptic but what you have said makes me realise I must understand the tech analysis approach (another tool in the armoury perhaps!). Share investing should be a bit more than a gamble I agree, though it’s the “unknowns” (or at least the unknown unknowns!) that means uncertainty and therefore unpredictability a but one has to ‘speculate to accumulate”. I guess that’s where diversity comes in :) cheers!

Anyone hear that R4 item about a company that’s introduced a Defined Benefit pension scheme? 15% employee contribution at 1/80th rate or 5% for a 1/120th rate.... hmmm... they can be supported just with less risk to the company.... the removal of DB pension schemes is a race downward and the employee/retiree takes the risk (business and the markets take less...). But we’re all in it (the market) for more money. A virtuous or viscous circle? But enough philosophy! gla

Thanks. I haven’t looked into the Chartist way of analysis... I guess I should! for a rounded view. Though are all Chartists in the money?! And really at the end of the day it is indeed a gamble (how ever it is calculated *and* emotionally arrived at)... who can tell... pension is an issue and how the business is going to have to adapt to the mobile-centric world... It definitely won’t be the same landscape in 5 years time- just hope it’s leading it and not trying to catch up.

I messaged HL via their site and have heard nothing back. Biding my time - when I call them up I will doubly complain about shoddy service.
