The latest Investing Matters Podcast with Jean Roche, Co-Manager of Schroder UK Mid Cap Investment Trust has just been released. Listen here.
m...I am expecting a slow continued rise on DUNL, but I have been wrong a lot lately. On MRW, I still like them but they do appear to be in the dodrums at the moment I think they have just dropped out of the FTSE so could well go a bit lower as trackers dump them. I am still a fan of them, their own farms, wholesale fish business (Falfish?) and personally I prefer shopping there than Tesco but of course we usually shop at Lidl!!! Says it all I suppose.
I let OH do the shopping alone this morning, too blustery out there for me. Ha, laziness might come into it too.
C...Commiserations on selling MCRO for them then to start rising. I have learnt over the years that there is no single rule regarding a company's share price around ex divi, all else being equal, it should drop by the amount of the divi and continue at that level. In practice as we know, all else isn't equal. With MCRO in my view, I think it is on a general trend up, potential buyers may have waited for it to go ex divi to buy cheap, perhaps thinking it would fall more than the value of the divi today. Hindsight is 20-20, I couldn't have predicted this yesterday! 11p dividend is worth having, especially if trying to maximise divi income for tax reasons in an ordinary trading account. Indeed, I used to do a lot of that.
With PFC, I can't seem to read the price at the moment but again, feel it is on an uptrend.
Just noticed my portfolios value have gone up quite a bit, seems that is down to all my boats trying to get into harbour together, SNG,NCYT, GGP (my 3 biggest shareholdings) and AVCT
Had a resonable but busy day, inspired by m, I did 3 in and outs on AVCT and 2 on ASC.
Feel that AVCT is doing so well lately that perhaps I will regret selling todays "traders" still have my core holding.
Hope everyone made some gains, whether it be shares or money.
Done 2 quick in and outs on AVCT today for 1.5% and 1.6% profit. Also just sold ASC that I dought first thing for 1.6% profit, could have got more but I was too eager. Got to try and keep up with m's prodigous effort. (for which jolly well done). Have got some more AVCT held for 2 weeks at 208p which are showing 17% profit. I don't want to sell them, think they have further to go, hence my confidence in buying more AVCT earlier.
T...thanks for the hopefull words on NCYT. So that's NCYT, GGP and SNG all expecting good news. Could all my boats come in at once? Nah.
T...no didn't sell ASC but getting ready to now.
Sold some AVCT bought this morning for 1.6% profit, so passed my meaningless target for the week.
C...No, I think T is the captain, I am merely the adjutant general having been promoted from adjutant a few months back.
Just checking but did you read my posting of yesterday at 16:25?
T...thanks for the probable good news on GGP.
BTC and ARB doing nicely. I am having thoughts of selling some above 260. Starting to feel I have too much skin in that game.
Bought ASC first thing at 5335, could sell now for +1.4% but expecting at least 2%. Ha
V...any PS5 news yet? There are 6 people on this chat board who need to breathe again
Good morning Brigands.
I think that it's very helpful and mutually supportive that we are sharing our trading experiences and strategies.
m...Having just read your post from last night I see lots of similarities with my trading life.
Good luck all today
C... you have almost all hands on the "problem". i,e. how to continually make profits. As an example consider my PFC trading since 16 Feb, in 6 sells, I have made 20.7% profit on PFC, the prices I bought and sold at ranged between 126 and 137.5p. Note several things...
1. I hardly ever got the highest sell price or the lowest possible buy price so my return could have been better.
2. I don't compound, my tranches tend to be the same "round" number each time, so my return could have been better.
3. The % gain from 126 to 137.5 is about 10%, I made 20.7%. How? By taking regular smaller profits. Playing the smaller waves that most people don't even see.
4. PFC is non stampy, VERY important point but doesn't prevent making reasonably good profits on volatile stampy shares.
5. My buy and sell costs are £3/trade but this is'nt a deal breaker.
6. One needs to be monitoring the price often, not all the time and can be ameliorated by using limit buys and sells but not quite as profitable.
7. I am not just doing this with PFC but with several shares including PLUS. This is to spead the risk of complete wipeout if a share went bankrupt (has happened to me 3 times ALB, CLLN and NMC) also it gives me options to trade elsewhere in case I am spiked (happerned to me masny times).
8. PLUS is a case in point, like a few of us that have been spiked (having a tranche quite a bit higher than current prices), I have money there doing nothing. Now T has his solution, i.e.sell the bl++dy things and get using the funds elsewhere (or in the same share at a lower point). T has a method, an admirable method, spikes and shakes which has two glorious advantages. Firstly compounding is built in, i.e.whatever funds one raises by selling is used to buy back more (or fewer) shares. Secondly, it concentrates on shareholding size, the number of shares in a company and not the price. This liberates the mind when one baulks at the idea of selling for less than you paid for something.
I still find this a difficult concept, i understand it but find it hard to action. This year I have only twice sold something for less than I paid, and one of them was a miscalculation! Perhaps there is a middle path and I am continually learning.
Hope this is of some help. I am sure T will comment if I have misrepresented him. He would say you have to trade in a method that you are happy with. Everyone seems to have their own method due to familiarity, attitude to risk, etc
Finally, no, he didn't mean 5% a year, he meant 5% per week and it is possible.
Hope
Just to show you how out of touch I am, I didn't understand the references to H & M, what company is that? It was ages till the penny dropped. Also, had to look up what HODL was, I assumed it was a miss spelling of HOLD. Doh! I am getting too old for this game.
