Morning all,
Ivy,
" it is by nature fun to speculate about future multiples of the current SP as long as people don’t start confusing fantasy with reality and over extend themselves"
I don't have a problem exploring "what if" scenarios but it is important that people remember it is an IF.
Yesterday, the scenario was "what if MODI sales reached the same level as Keytruda - $25B?"
This gave rise to numerous valuations on SP. Actually, the formula used to calculate is very simple - it is the values you plug in that are the challenge. ALL companies are valued on earnings or estimated future earnings so the calculation is
Income (sales and royalties) * net profit * PE = Market cap / shares in issue = future SP.
So on sales of £18B ($25B), 15% royalty, 20% net profit, PE of 10 and 985M shares = SP of £5.52
If you go ultra optimistic you could say
Sales of £18B ($25B), 15% royalty, 60% net profit, PE of 40 and 985M shares = SP of £66.20
So the individual figures aren't unrealistic - there are companies who make 60% net and there are companies with PEs of 40 (and over). This would depend on the likely success and value of other products in the pipeline.
So two sets of figures with arguably realistic values but different by a factor of 10.
Note: All based on a highly speculative sales figure of $25B.
