The potential in diagnostics has been under the radar. I guess the big manufacturers are invested in status quo. I guess I'm hoping the brand that comes out of this and sticks in peoples minds is Affimers / Avacta and not Cytiva, Covid, Medusa, boo hook or whatever

We know the market for antibodies is huge - lab, therapeutics , diagnostics. They all rely on the principle of a binding reagent.

Affimers are in same space but with the POTENTIAL of major advantages.

If avacta crack this testing malarky when so many have struggled then if they shoukd brand the affimers as the high tech solution. Markets wet dream

Something along the lines of Affimer Inside (see Intel). Fits with strategy to be partner and their IP positions. Which diagnostic company wouldnt want to work with them after they save the world.

I don't think Avacta have stated what their limit of detection is. They have suggested they achieve suitable binding in a lab test at nanamolar. They have sent Cytiva the affirmers to develop that result onto a LFD. We don't know if the technical elements of this have been achieved - that said we are all here because we believe it is likely.

I'm guessing (from some experience)
Testing of prototypes will involve known concentrations of covid. Then it will move to biogical samples from known covid patients - possibly comparing to PCR.

They then might do a batch field test.

I think the first RNS will be to say they have a prototype that works in lab.

This is applicable to so many sitiations - levels of various biomarkets of disease.

Tell my kids immunology is the future of medicine for next 10 years. CAR-T cell stuff is like something off star trek. Will be followed by proper stem cell / gene therapy.

This while Covid thing has also increased the awareness of diagnostics and therefore perceived value. Given how fast Avacta turned around affirmers I suspect lots of infectious disease departments are writing up research proposals - as the bus dev guys in pharma.

I think it could be morning glory. PM not daft enough to allude to something that he cannot deliver. I can hear that bloke with the funny hair asking him "last week you promised pregnancy type kits, where are they".

In the interview he looked and sounded a bit nieive (no excuse). I think some journo said would you like to be on telly and he thought why not. I watched it but couldn't work out what the excitement was about - everuthing he said repeated what people already knew.

I spent the morning having a look. I think

1. Abingdon Health imvolved. High production capability

2. They will release a blue print anyone can copy. Not sure about how that happens

3. Couldn't see anything that sets them apart other than govt endorsement and to be honest I think mhra / CE mark will be the same. Lot of competition and race to the lowest price.

I wish them luck - no problem someone else making money but just not for me.
