Bit more colour from last week's ST by Oliver ShahP:
"On the topic of private equity, Richard Buxton of Jupiter Asset Management makes an interesting point. Several factors are driving the surge of money into privately held assets, but an under-discussed one is volatility – and or the lack of it, if you invest in a private fund.
Public equities are priced every day, meaning a quoted portfolio might be down by 30 per cent in one quarter and back to where it was the next. Private equity portfolios are valued a few times a year. That seems to smooth out returns.
“The regulators, actuaries and consultants, by insisting that volatility is a component of measuring returns, are driving long term institutions away from quoted equity into private equity,” says Buxton. “It drives me demented!”
We can sit out the craziness around us imo. Oil is still a commodity the world will need for decades yet and we are a "going concern" with rising cash and are in profit. I don't know how you can short a company with those credentials!
