A bright Green future8 Mar 2016 10:20
The hotel laundry industry has had little innovation in the past 60 years. But change is on the horizon and there are a few items spurring this industry transformation. Let's take a look at three things that will be paramount in the future of hotel laundry.
Conserving water and energy will be essential
Sustainability initiatives which are already widespread in business will continue to grow. Even in the tourism industry where luxury and indulgence are its hallmarks, hoteliers are responding to the public's environmental concerns and will continue to initiate and expand green business practices.
Hotels are taking a deep look into areas to reduce their environmental impact and because laundry operations have high usage of both water and energy, it will be critical to going green.
Traditional laundry operations use tremendous amount of water and energy and produce toxic wastewater creating a large carbon footprint. Laundries perpetual use of water makes it one of the hotel industry's largest water consumers. Conventional laundry operations in hotels represent 20 percent of overall water usage. In the U.S., a hotel laundry service uses approximately 25 gallons of water for each occupied room every single day.
Standard commercial laundry machines use 2-3 gallons of water per pound all which has to be heated resulting in significant energy usage. Energy costs represent 7-10 % of a commercial laundry's operating costs.
More and more guests are looking at a hotel's green practices when selecting a hotel. Green hotel certifications are becoming increasingly prevalent and valued by guests. Conserving water and energy will be a key factor for hoteliers earning green seals of environmental stewardship and for reducing operational costs.
