THG announces ten-year tie-up with rival
THG, the owner of Cult Beauty and other online cosmetics brands, has announced a ten-year tie-up with Maximo, a rival, in a rare bright spot for the beleaguered company.
News of the partnership sent THG shares up 1¼p, or 2 per cent, to 65p yesterday. After a tumultuous time, they have gone up about 40 per cent this year, despite the company issuing a profit warning in January.
Maximo will be using THG’s digital commerce platform Ingenuity, its payments systems, warehousing and delivery. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed but THG said it would add £150 million to the value of goods sold through the platform this year. Matthew Moulding, THG’s chief executive, said: “This represents the early fruits of our focus on larger enterprise customers . . . I am delighted with the progress of our refocused sales team, with our pipeline continuing to build momentum. Our addressable market across beauty, FMCG [fast-moving consumer goods] and retail is significant and will continue to expand as a result of our continuous programme of innovation.”
THG, which was founded in 2004 and sells cosmetics and dietary supplements from hundreds of websites, was the UK’s biggest IPO in five years when it made its stock market debut in 2020, but its share price has since been hit because of concerns about its unorthodox governance, the reopening of high streets and questions about the value of Ingenuity. The group’s market value has sunk from £5 billion to less than £920 million. It said its profits would be lower than expected at the start of the year because of disruption to deliveries, contract delays and falling sales in one of its divisions.
The business, based in Manchester, has two activist investors on its shareholder register, Kelso and Sparta Capital. Kelso recommended that THG improve communications with investors by using the regulatory news service. Some analysts believe the market announcement yesterday was a sign that the business is following this guidance.
