RE: When in doubt walk out.5 Sep 2019 11:57
The shenanigans in our Parliament and the EU have for a number of years been purely political and I firmly believe that many politicians here and on the continent live their lives in a hermetically sealed bubble, out of touch and believing they are our masters and we are their servants. Whatever type of Brexit people voted for in the UK, the fact is they wanted out from the control of a non democratic and non elected institution, where we pay vast amounts for being able to trade with our neighbours, trade that would occur regardless as was the case before the EEC existed. This is regularly poo pooed by the remain side, saying we would have shortages in nearly all commodities, people dieing because pills and vaccines were not available, ports gridlocked due to extra checks, etc, etc.
Doubtless there would be delays and shortages and other issues, but it's not beyond our intelligence and abilities to find solutions. We are after all a creative and clever race, well able to find solutions and apply alternatives where we need to look beyond just the next page. Jeremy Bamford of JCB trades all over the world and has said that selling to Australia is as natural as selling to Austria. 40% of JCB exports are to WTO countries and they import £250 million a year of components from WTO countries. I'd sooner listen to a businessman with vast experience than a politician who reads from a pre prepared briefing designed to scare and undermine our wrong view of the EU.
Sadly, the activities of our Parliament for the last two and a half years have revolved around the politics of power, exhibited many times by politicians of all parties attempting to further their own agendas. The central issue of leaving the EU has become a side show, deformed by the egos of MPs who believe their judgement and knowledge is greater than the chattering masses. We are regularly told we don't know what we voted for or how it was to be brought about. We may have voted to leave but which leave did we mean. Seemingly, leaving the EU and reasserting sovereignty of our own Parliament and making our own trade deals isn't clear enough.
For many people I think this whole affair has become toxic, principally because most MPs believe the people made the wrong decision. They want to delay, slow down and curtail the whole process and, if they can, instigate another referendum. They hope they would get a different result, proving their superior knowledge was correct all along. But do they tell us about the changes the EU will be instigating in the very near future. The removal of the veto, no longer will one country be able to reject policy change as majority voting will apply. The removal of the rebate, no more will the UK receive a refund from the EU coffers. Harmonisation of certain taxes, the attractive business rate level in the UK has seen many companies come to our shores but we will lose this competitive edge once the EU applies this legislation.
