Nope... he's right. DHSC says CE/UKCA marking and then evaluation by PHE Porton Down if the test is to be included in the sovereign test programme: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/lateral-flow-validation-prioritisation-criteria-for-rapid-diagnostic-assays-for-specific-sars-cov-2-antigens

CE marking will allow the antigen test to be sold commercially in the UK but without the PHE Porton Down validation it will not be used by PHE/Test & Trace or be part of the sovereign test programme.

Wasn't someone claiming on Monday that it was going to be CE marked this week... and I (and others) were pointing out it hadn't completed all the clinical trials yet.

Whoever was drafting the CAN at DHSC was probably reusing a completed template and didn't check it properly...

The government has now been forced to admit that there are delays in the AZ vaccine supply, which means that they will have to roll back on their ambitious vaccination plans - including potentially on the 2nd dose due in April and May. This could be an opportunity for deployment of the AbC19 test, to check whether those who have have had a first dose have had an immune response. This would potentially enable remaining stocks of the vaccines to be given to those most in need.

The question is, will the government think along these lines (which I know are being suggested by scientists) - or just go with their usual obfuscations, spin and lies, aided and abetted by a client media?

Arguably they do - the SureScreen test has passed all the PHE Porton Down assessments. Arguably, it be manufactured as a 'sovereign test'.

However, MHRA have changed the antigen LFT TPP and assessment priorities several times in recent months. I think existing established suppliers are being given an opportunity to tweak their test sample types to ensure they meet those revised requirements. HMG wants as many domestic suppliers as possible to have acceptable tests so that demand can be met domestically.

They are a social enterprise manufacturing firm established by Mologic, aimed primarily at producing for (and training staff for) LMI countries. Their capacity has been taken by HMG in the short term.
