What's disappointing is that in neither of the paper from the Tony Blair Institute is there any mention of the UK-Rapid Test Consortium. The reference to Omega is in relation to the Mologic tests.

Your wine schtick is all very well, except it fails to take into account that the majority of the wine produced in the world - and included in the figures you quoted - is non-'vintage fine wine'. High priced vintage fine wines make up a small proportion of overall production and volume, even in Old World production.

PHE still exists but it's effectively dead in the water - it's a bust flush. It is in the process of being split up. The new NIPH will get Track and Trace, albeit that it will get localised, together with pandemic preparedness. Joint Biosecurity Centre will probably get notifiable causative organisms (although there may be a dual reporting with NIPH) whilst notifiable diseases will likely remain with local authority proper officers. Most of it's other functions (health promotion, substance misuse, immunisations, screening) will go back to the NHS.

In any event, PHE doesn't give approval for the Covid tests. MHRA and the NTAG do.

You need to bear in mind that this is a relatively new disease. There is still a lot we don't know about it. The evidence on what level of immunity is created following infection is mixed. With many such diseases, we can't be sure about things like reinfection rates and immunity for a number of years.

If you have antibodies then the clinical evidene (as it currently stands) suggests you have a level of immunity. These are the people who can safely return to work. We also need to know how long any antibodies last (e.g. how long any immunity - before we start getting into T cells) might last - the only way to do that is large scale antibody testing.

The UK is months behind other countries with all this.

They're not even at 80% at the moment. DHSC figures says 67% but the reality on the ground says otherwise. Other half's sister is a public health person put onto T&T - she's lucky to make one call a week, despite being in a hotspot. The level of data being provided to enable tracing is abysmal.

The sooner they can roll out the RTC tests, together with either BBIs app - or integrate that app with the NHS T&T app (which is the Google/Apple app), the better to see those numbers increase.

This may be given further impetus by the possibility of a significant uptick in cases that some fairly reliable experts are suggesting will hit in the next 3-4 weeks...
