Part of the hammer strategy is to buy time to do things like develop the right tests and a strategy to go with it depending also on the availability of the tests and perhaps developing enough manufacturing capacity for the chemicals involved.

The field of vaccines appears to be a big subject with different approaches and, I suspect, many specialisms.

Here the accent is on how to combat foreign invaders - viruses and bacteria.

Whereas with cancer the problem, to my mind, appears different in that we have healthy cells that have mutated into cancerous cells. So here the problem is to attack these mutated cells without damaging the very similar healthy cells. So the key is to find some difference in the cancer cells and then find a means of attacking it.

I should imagine there is some overlap in the development of cancer vaccines and those that give the body a defence against viruses but I doubt if it is a large overlap.

The ratio of cases to deaths in Germany is about 100 to 1 whilst in the UK it is more like 15 to 1.

Now, if we are comparing apples with apples that seems like a big difference.
Are Germany doing more testing?
Are they more efficient at tracing the contacts people have made?

You see a similar ratio in Austria.

I mention testing and tracing contacts since these were the methods South Korea used to bring the outbreak under control .
So perhaps Germany and Austria copied the South Korea methods and did it quickly.

It certainly looks like some nations are being pro-active whilst others are reactive. I'm just trying to understand why some nations seem to be better than others at controlling the virus.

One thing is certain, our NHS doctors and nurses deserve all the credit they get.
And no criticism for our experienced scientists advising the government.

Thanks for that Konar. That's also the conclusion I came to when reading the article.
It must be very difficult to produce a very accurate model due to the many variables, some of which are still unknown.
A model is only as good as the data feeding it. In this case the data is still being researched.
How contagious, whether it is airborne, will heat help kill it.
I am glad the UK government has chosen the suppress route, rather than do nothing or mitigation.
How strict and extensive the suppress measures need to be, only time will tell.
One thing is sure, the mathematical model being used will continually be tweaked as new data becomes available.

We'll see what the Russian linesman says.
Also with Trump as the ref I'm sure the goal will stand.

I thought is was a brilliant cross from the right-wing (made more difficult since I normally play on the left wing).
