Yes, it may cost more to the government to let the company fold, but its not about the money for them, it�s about setting a precedent that badly managed companies won�t be bailed out by the government, and thus allowing the capitalism model to work its course.
However, banks are a differently kettle of fish as they have the government by the balls and must bail them out to avoid a serious financial meltdown.
