It would be a weak stance if that's how they think, but I can see why you think it.
Put the boot on the other foot though. China needs these materials, it needs iron ore and it needs copper and it needs gold. And for the most part its noa massively resource-laden country, so it will need to carry on importing it all.
If it doesn't want BHP's metals, it must increase its importing from elsewhere, which of course will put the price up on them.
Totally agree that getting Jiangxi to formalise their bid opens the floodgates, but I fully expect BHP to get involved. Having made a move to take 75% control of ENSA back in 2018, they know better than any other major what is there and how to get it out of the ground.
