If you removed the subsidy from them, then sales would plummet. If you have to intervene in a free market then you can be sure the product is rubbish.

If EVs were cheaper and better, and the same goes for heat pumps then you wouldn't have to bribe or coerce people to buy them because they'd want them anyway.

Imagine they came up with a car half the price of an EV, that was cheap to insure, cheap to run, easy and cheap to fix, didn't depreciate horrifically and could be recharged in about three minutes at any one of thousands of convenient outlets around the country. People would knock the forecourt doors down to buy one.

But still nearly half of homes have nowhere to put a charger and without that the charging is a fortune.
