25 new power projects by Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are under construction in various parts of the country and will add up to 12,464 megawatts of electricity to the national grid by 2028.
The state-run news agency, APP reported this, quoting sources within the Power Infrastructure Board (PPIB). The board was set up in 1994 to promote private investments in the power sector. Later, PPIB was converted into a statutory organization through the Private Power and Infrastructure Board Act 2012 (Act VI of 2012).
The report said that the power infrastructure board facilitated these projects over the years, some of them will commence operations from the current year. Year-wise completion details of these power projects is given below:
2020: The 1263 MW RLNG project near Trimmu Barrage Jhang will be ready by 2020.
2021: Five more projects with a cumulative capacity of 2047 MW will come into line by 2021. These include two 330 MW Thar coal power plants, another 660 MW Thar coal power plant, 7.08 MW Riali-II hydropower, and 720 MW Karot Hydropower.
2022: Four more projects generating 2160 MW will be completed by 2022. These are 330 MW Thar coal, 1320 MW Thar coal, 870 MW Suki Kinari hydropower, and a 300 MW imported coal power plant.
2023: A project with a total capacity of 1980 MW is scheduled to be added to the national grid.
A 105-kilometer long railway line will be laid from Chorr to Islamkot to transport coal from Thar to Port Qasim and upcountry, apart from the installation of 1,320 MW power plant in Thar Coal Block-VI under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)-related projects.
The was decided at a meeting held here at the CM House on Friday between Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah and CPEC Authority (CPECA) Chairman General (r) Asim Saleem Bajwa.
The first phase is the technical feasibility for setting up 1320 MW power plant, railway line from Thar to Keti Bandar, power evacuation to national grid, construction of coal jetty and allied infrastructure.
