If its a good stock, the daily ups and downs don't have a huge effect on long term investments.
If you are younger you can afford to accept more risk, as you have a longer timeframe to recover any losses, as you get older there is a tendancy to become more risk adverse as the opposite is true.
Making profit consistently on investing is very time consuming and involves a lot or work and research. Many on these boards don't bother or believe reading a bb post or following The Motley Fool is research. Some will get lucky, most will not.
I would suggest reading the company reports and keeping abreast of current affairs. But expect to pick some losers, everyone does sooner or later. I have and will do again, sometimes it might be a 'Black Swan', sometimes its just my fault plain and simple, usually because I tried to cut corners and didn't look closely enough before buying. I always try to remember if something looks too good to be true, it usualy is.
