I bought these to hold around 39p last year -they had come to rest after a big fall as most property companies. I dumped them soon afteras they were drifting and some of the trades looked dodgy sells coming up as buys etc. Good luck Pat

Always neglected PRU and LGEN in favour of Aviva . FSA now demanding that Life Insurers keep better reserves to accomodate Footsie going as low as 2000 ! Well if things are as bad as Mervyn says is that indeed possible or is he the first class useless that says he cannot predict the future. The BOE Governor that now tells us the money supply incresing only 1% whereas last year it was 8% ! Now he says it and indeed it has been at high levels for years when they have been telling us their inflation target was 2% -and we all know from house prices and everything else that 2% was a joke -and he tries to tell us they didn't know what was coming. Now they think to debasing the currency. But regarding Pru never a great payer to its shareholders and LGEN a few years ago had a major hiccups. I would stick with Aviva but as for the rest if the Govt are requiring them to hold more capital then the divi in these two is looking wobbly which must account for the drop todaym . Pat

This company has long term contracts with British powerstations. It is not a spot coal seller. Its prices are very competitive and the 6% yield well covered. The long term contracts underpin the company stability but the SP has suffered from deleveraging by hedge funds and mistaken retail sentiment that lower spot prices would affect them

Well Waitrose sell 1K for 93p and not the only ones for granulated sugar. Iceland have some at 75p -that compares with 52p when the share price was 269p in 2003/4. Some current market dislike of corporate debt at present a negative.Other brands on shelves are beet sugar not cane sugar -some buy any -however prices for these 'generic' sugars little cheaper and more than Iceland. I have small holding of these -not enough to lose sleep over-but if you really do worry about these you should never hold shares I suggest as it is still a profitable company. I post No Opinion as I was looking for Weak Hold at about 322p today. Pat

Cannot locate the TATE share on here . Its about 330p and a great long standing British Company and I always buy their cane sugar. Also good divi payer. But recently a CRAP share and one I wish I had followed Daily Telegrapgh advice and dumped at £4.00 on last rally in January. Brokers weak on it at mo because of corporate debt level. I remember it at 269p for long time after last bear market and have thought its defensive qualities might be keeping it away from there but it might just revisit and then rebound . I see this one as a proxy /quasi energy stock -it even into ethaqnol but not a great asset with oil at 45$ But Iam confident about Tate & Lyle longer term. Maybe someone disagrees for a good reason! I see this as a great hold and quite a defensive on e too on strong YEN. However my worry is that not enough people will realise the good fundamentals to drive the share price. It pays a divi too and is well placed as bought assets when Yen was cheap. If sterling recovers not quite so attractive but a long way to go. Japan would rebound also if the yen eases back with better foreign earnings that are hurtin a bit at present-but this seems a safe backwater. I sometimes am very frustrated that what on pure economics and fundamentals looks good passes unoticed because it is a small stock. My other frustration is Puma Brandenburg - Berlin residential mainly -but I think the Jap stock is better. After all its property income from rents not housebuilders!!! Pat

I saw these in a little column in Moneyweek. I was so impressed with what they DO when I went to their website that I couldn't get a few quick enough at 137p. Today I see them at 152p and I am glad I got in. I think they are still reasonable to buy -that is for long term -if you look at their website you will undersytand how I feel about this company in present times. However I noticed their earnings trough might be in 2010 -good organic growth from 2011 -its a divi payer -quite a decent payer better than the likes of Quinitech !! Pat

IT also is a fact the Bank of Spain has protected their Banks far better than BOE in preventing off balance sheet conduits of the kind that have ruined some British banks. BBVA and BPE have not raise any capital. BPE is ex div for the quarter shortly as is BPE both available on International Retail Service Santandar next quarterly divi early Feb ex date. A lot of what I have written applies to european holdings in general as all the banks have fallen . One that has held up well is the German retail bank Comdirect (CDR) about 6 euro. I hold small amounts of BNC BVA and BPE . Abbey National Prefs have held up surprisingly well lately and I am awaiting with interest to see if their next results show any UK housing market impairment. If there is much -I wonder if SAntandar would pay the dividend as thet own the company or would they get out of it under limited liability? ! Perhaps somone knows. Pat

An enormously difficult scenario to analyse because of its complexity from the position of a UK shareholder. If you live in Spain and use euro its somewhat easier. However this share has retraced quite substantially from 15 euro to just over 6. BBVA has held up better at 9 and BPE the 3rd spanish bank that is internal and retail has also dropped to 6 but from a lower peak so it has fared better. All these banks are affected by internal recssion exacerbated by euro strength but Santandar is hit by its external exposure to UK and to Latin American commodity weakness affecting input currencies like Brazilian Real. . All these spanish banks provide some protection from a potential sterling collapse BBVA and BPE the better ones I think short term but Santandar has excellent long term possibilities with its Latin exposure. However for a UK investor with all these the euro now = £1 or near. Much of the recent decline in these share prices has been relieved by sterling depreciation of 30%. If sterling recovers the value of these shares will fall further and at best will impair the value in sterling of future share price appreciation. Finally if the Spanish did have to pull out of the euro the share value in sterling may also fall -even if there is a subsequent recovery. The final factor is that eurozone has entered recession later than UK and it may be that the full impact is not yet fully reflected in Spanish banks .(cont)

Lot of sharebuybacks recently. With money being repatriated into Japan it has to go somewhere and proerty the likely place.

Several recent buybacks of this stock. Beneficiary of sterling collapse against euro. Residential property in Berlin Frankfurt and Koln mainly . People have to live somewhere whatever business confidence not positive. NAV 124p per share. ? worth small punt but care if sterling rebounds -not likely at present. Divi payer

SAntandar has performed badly recently. Look at the other Spanish Banks BBVA performing better and Banco Popular (BPE) All have quarterly dividends less the 18% witholding tax which can be reclaimede and as of last April you no longer have to pay UK tax as well.

UU now yielding about 5% . Divi about30p for year nothing exciting but they plan to increase by 2% plus RPI which means once interest rates bottom and look like rising it will be iffy -but for the meantime next 6months or so looks OK

I sold Alliance and Leicester just before the conversion date as I sensed Santandar share price was struggling around £9.00 . I bought today just over £7 which I believe is good for long term but have continuing anxiety for the next year due to Spanish domestic property market and the effect of recent events on the Brazilian economy. The other question is potential euro weakness against $ -even some sterling recovery -so its a difficult one to wegh up. However quarterly dividend due Nov 1st. Also we are getting through October and I think November will start a bull run for a while during Barak Obamas honeymoon period. Pat

Rio Tinto bought 14% stake. Maybe they will go for the whole company before long . Produces 8% of worlds uranium
