Yes you rarely get the full picture. I smiled the other day when some climate activist proudly announced that Portugal had recently survived 6 days purely on solar, wind & hydro, promoting this as some form of victory against the net zero naysayers. Yes we do well with sunshine, the wind is intermittent and you can forget hydro. What he failed to mention is that as darkness falls in late autumn / winter many of us turn to our Pellet / Wood / BBQ Burners for warmth and/or cooking, which is cheaper than electricity. We get thro thousands*of tonnes of wood annually and given that a single cubic metre of wood stores about 1 tonne of CO2, it releases more than burning gas, oil or coal for the same amount of heat. That same activist may get a shock when in a few years time his emission readings are still rising !
*just taken delivery of 4cubic m. that should get me thro winter. Log man said he’s reserved about 100 c.m of wood ( Spanish oak ) for our tiny hamlet of about 20 properties this year. Not good but that’s a lot of CO2 !
