The latest Investing Matters Podcast episode featuring financial educator and author Jared Dillian has been released. Listen here.
Certainly glad I held off ITV this morning, just dropped another 10% after pretty decent results drops 30%? Naked Trader pretty deep in here. So he finally got one wrong. Rumour they are buying rest of Britbox off beeb. Anyone know anyone whose ever bought Britbox selling programs to watch we already paid for several times over. If it looks too good to be true.....etc. Clothes retailers getting hammered all round. Funnily enough I've just bought more clothes last week than I have in the last ten years. Should improve the profile.... slightly
Well that about sums up Putin's army. Two Russian helmeted security manhandling 90 year woman peacefully protesting! Putin can turn off all the media outlets he likes . The world already knows
Wondering about ITV, the perennial takeover target. Best not get distracted. T excellent collecting funds to support Ukraine victims. Apparently Abromovitch intends to give the proceeds from Chelsea to 'war victims.' I guess that means the murdering Russians too. Apparently he conducted all the interviews for Putin's inner circle, so although he likes to be seen to be doing the right thing, looks like he is just desperate to save his skin with a decent wadge of cash hidden away somewhere. He has been refused citizenship in Switzerland which is unusual for the rich loving country.
Great prog on BBC 4 last night about the demise of the independent Russian TV station 'Rain' the brainchild and owner of an incredible lady called Natasha. Some interesting insights to how the Kremlin eventually thwarted every effort form this heroic band of youngsters to keep independent news flow alive and their moto to tell the truth which is of course illegal.
I was wondering how other former states were supporting the Ukraine. Georgia have held a few smallish rallies but little Estonia have supplied Ukraine with tanks but have been criticised for not yet supplying jets they promised. It would seem to me that Russia is severely weakened at the moment by deploying 75% of its troops to Ukraine.
Morning brigade. NB. Yes we have seen a few ups and downs. The first one for me being 87 crash. That took about 18 months to recover. Erm and mortgage related from memory. Mortgages doubled fro around 9% to 18%. A bit like the Russians today. I was mainly fighting to hang on to our house while others with little equity in their homes just handed their keys into estate agents and tried to disappear. One guy did that quite spectacularly bu conning Lloyds into loaning him about a million quid to buy a mansion and disappeared with the money to buy property near the Berlin Wall being pulled down at the time . Reactionary investing!
I watched a zoom with investment managers being asked what they were doing at the moment. Mostly they said 'nothin' for fear of doing the wrong thing. Bit different for them because of the size of their portfolios. We are as they say at a crossroad. The time for panic selling hopefully passed. One great point they made was that in the age of internet investing action tends to happen at speed so the falls can be fast and brutal but also the recovery can be swift and stratospheric as witnessed when the pandemic broke.
Having said that each event has to be looked at on its own merit from 9/11, Kuwait invasion, Iraq, etc. All having a profound effect.
Unfortunately Russia has the potential to be catastrophic depending on the mental health of nuclear Putin and the strength of those around him to intervene if needed. According to a post on IAG this morning someone tweeted imploring us to leave reviews on trip advisor of Russian restaurants and places like KFC to tell the people their not to believe their media that has made no mention of the 40 mile convoy outside Kiev that has run out of petrol, frozen fuel lines, mud and morale broken, apart from not having a clue what the plan is if there is one.
As an ex soldier explained last night if you go into war you need a plan both for victory and exit. Russia clearly have been wrong footed about Ukraine resistance, Western unity and universal condemnation and crippling sanctions.
The initial rally in the markets after immediate invasion was the west expecting a quick result either way. Barring a nuclear intervention victory seems to be tilting Ukraines way again. The next question is what are the west going to do with Russia should this be the case and Putin is still alive. I should imagine he will face enough wrath from his own people and any new regime would be face strict conditions if they want to re establish trade with the west which they will have to. They need us a lot more than we need them. So the eventual possible outcome looks very positive and quick, but there is of course a big if. I'm not planning on doing much more than taking up the placing and have a small amount to reinvest, probably in a couple of investment trust whose NAVs have widened considerably in this latest crisis. Tricky days ahead. Most of my pf looking rather unwell. One of few exceptions being CNIC which announced a raise yesterday @1.20. Today its actually gone up to !.37. Must be a first for placings. Not bad in this climate and us small share holders get to take part. Obviously being and internet business things like supply shortages, interest rates etc have no direct impact. But admit T I thought Wales were going to do us in the red zone. Caught them napping in the first half. Both yet to face France. As usual they improve through the season. Wales look much better too. England could go close but would have to catch France on a bad day and improve to play 80 minutes not just the first quarter. Held on well in the end, but should be attacking not defending. Wont get away with that against France. My boys are taking me to see Harlequins v London Irish in April so hope to see Marcus Smith live
DJ. Lovely description of Oliver Reed on a bouncy castle. Took me right back to a pub I worked in with him and his brother as customers. thankfully not regulars. They wanted to 'punch my lights out' when I refused to serve them long after closing. Wee bit to drunk to succeed. Reed used to take his builders down his more local pub in Dunsfold of a Friday lunchtime. Then sack them for not getting on with the job, and re employ them all the following week, rinse and repeat! Don't know if the house ever got finished!
DJ. Exactly right. John Author Points of view on Bloomberg goes into a much longer explanation of what you say. The market reaction today, yesterday in NY is crazy. they are saying ok Putin gets what he wants. The sanctions are ineffective and to a large extent already factored in by Putin now murdering civilians in Kiev as I write. Its awful. The consequences are annihilating Putin are immense. The consequences of not annihilating him are far greater. Exactly as with Hitler. We can sit around and hope some poor devil tries a suicide attack on Putin, (didn't work with Hitler either) What exactly do the Russians want with Chernobyl now? Putin will just keep pushing slowly. He's in for the long game.
He has murdered or arranged the murder of several people here in the UK and no doubt countless other countries. Risking the health and safety of the people in Salisbury, and ruined lives and businesses there already. What did our government do ? Sweet fa. They just say 'oo we tried a bit of diplomacy' and stopped importing Russian dolls for a month.' Our parents sacrificed everything to defeat Hitler.
Morning all. The end to an historic week for all the wrong reasons. Finally the conservatives have turned on their oligarch friends. My sons had to prove where and how they got their hard earned cash to put a deposit down on their houses. Oligarchs could just get Uk banks to launder their money and buy blocks of flats, housing estates and football clubs with a donation to the Conservative party, no questions asked. I believe it was Merv the swerve, former head of Bank of England who told us the party was over after the financial crash, while our next chancellor Osborne was partying on a Russian oligarch frigate in the Greek Islands. I remember when I bought a couple of houses in Margate a few years ago , there as a Russian oligarch frigate used to moor up just off the coast. Apparently on a property buying spree . It was a rumour, what the purpose was , but the ship was very real and very Russian and was there regularly for periods of a couple of weeks from time to time. Well it looks like the party is over now Merv. As the PM said last night, the bill will cost us. Bp are obviously going to pay a fair bit. Seems Asia have followed the USA bounce for now. Extreme caution is the word. Thank god I got out of FXPO which was my largest holding at one stage. No doubt the ore will still be in the ground if the Russians haven't mined it all with bombs. GL all
N-B that is a question often pondered. I think the answer lies somewhere around last May was the time to go to cash! I honestly feel safer invested than too much cash right now with rising inflation. If it were to continue, your cash will be worth half what it is now in 5 years time. Hindsight is a beautiful thing but timing is as much about luck as anything. If world war 3 were to kick off it wouldn't really matter anymore anyway. I hope this will be a relatively short affair judging by the way Russian military precession is being orchestrated. Its just a terrible tragedy diplomacy failed again for which I blame all leaders concerned equally, especially after seeing our own defence secretary Wallis in action in Afghanistan and recent briefing over Russia in London. God help us. As FXPO have stated' they are not really in a position to predict the outcome of Putins's intentions '
Its funny how share prices always come back to you. I missed out on a lot of potential profit in FXPO selling up a couple of years ago for this kind of scenario. As I was explaining to someone invested in POG, another stock I fortunately stopped trading, their prices were always suppressed because this risk was always there. As to the rest of the world I would expect normal service to resume for the most part, although it seems the energy crisis has only just begun.
It does kind of put 'partygate' into perspective. Perhaps thats what Boris was banking on. Spin everything out and something will eventually overshadow his own misdemeanours. On the other hand Trump has put his head back up over the parapet saying its America's weakness in withdrawing from Afghanistan that has allowed Putin to seize this opportunity. Obviously he has severe memory loss that he was the one in office at the time that instigated the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Morning all. A sad indeed T. I do admire the spirit of the Ukrainians and their optimism in defiance of tis horrific act of aggression. I see Putin claims he has no intention of occupying Ukraine! Seeing as everything he has said so far has been a lie I don't why he even bothers making statements anymore. Its all out in the open for his own people to see, and they must realise how the rest of the world feels about it, so its as much up to the Russian people to stop Putin as the UN. As you say T Putin has had plenty of time to feather his nest, but there is nowhere in the world he can hide. Despite all his wealth and gold Sadam Hussain's only hiding place was a hole in the ground
Morning all. Interesting clip of Putin seemingly toying with and being quite condescending to his spy chief. Why does he feel the need to rather unsurely publicly declare his support for his leaders decision, and be almost mocked for doing so? I wonder if his own position may become less secure in the coming months as far as his own people are concerned. So many distractions now its hard to know what and how the market is going to be effected by next
I think it might be wise to hang on for the opening in the USA even though the FTSE has barely batted an eyelid so far. The jury seems to be out over what if anything sanctions can achieve. Putin is a wily old fox , knows just how fast and far to push. A dangerous game but if he can keep things under control he may well achieve his objectives however much the west doth protest. The west and Europe will be seen to have done what they can and Russia will gain territory as he did in Crimea.
Love the picture of Sturgeon wearing a tartan sporran over her face whilst proclaiming whatever Johnson does she will do it differently just to be independent, except of course she isn't
Morning all. T I guess as one would expect is the over riding theme is ignore short term volatility and hold for the long term in conviction stocks. Clearly the y area bit rattled by record withdrawal from some of their funds during January. I think also a feeling that the market is very muddled at the moment and is no capable of recognising the wheat from the chaff. I was surprised how many of their funds have unlisted companies as well as the some of the biggest corps. If I'd have stayed mostly in BG funds that I bought in March 2020 I would be far better off now. However their rise from pre pandemic has not been as spectacular but still impressive largely thanks to the Dow. They are saying that the debate of value versus growth is misleading because the two things are actually quite closely correlated hence their faith in Amazon. I had to check on my memory about whether the Beatles ever sued Apple over infringement using the name of their record company. Indeed they did in 1980 and accepted out of court for $80,000! Could have been a few more noughts on that....although under Job I also remember they nearly went bust
Bigt calmer today. Lull before next storm. Ballie Gifford have some great investment podcasts with I find quite useful in terms of their thinking about future investment trends. Obviously a bit longer term strategies but Monks talk about amongst others how and why the market called Amazon wrong for many years.
Love the old bill giving Boris a questionnaire to fill in. They should do this with all criminals. Tick box. Were you at a party? yes/no. Was there alcohol? yes/no. Were there more than 6,10, 20, 50-100 people at the party? Please choose one, etc. Brilliant!
T. Very like disruption will continue, especially with chip manufacturing which affects just about everything all fuelling inflation. I think a biscuit manufacturer was trying to explain how the rise in container shipping has bone up from $1,000 permit last year to $15,000 this year. Thats quite a multi bagger! Then there are all the other costs like ingredients, wages , marketing packaging etc. No reason these costs cannot subside when supplies normalise. Petrol now at record highs, yet oil is still a third lower than its record high. How does that work? Well Bp and RDS have both more than doubled thats how. A big part of the reason why the Ftse regained the 7000s. Still all in it together and levelled up my rse.
Morning all. In typical contrarian stile the FTSe is actually up 22 points at the moment and Japan was down less than half a percent. Just shows how mad it is to predict share price movement. A much bigger game going on out there which we are not privy to. Stay safe and warm GL all
Good luck T and anyone else on the west side. Sounds like its going to be quite a day. Best stay in doors if you can and dont leave anything liable to take off lying around in the garden. Only too much you can do. I well remember the 87 storm having just moved in to a new old house. We watched in amazement as our neighbours greenhouse 'floated' across the garden completely in one piece. Haven't paid much attention to markets today as we have to let these morons who rule the world sort themselves out
Gooday for drizzly old east coast. Managed to get dog out earlier fortunately, Still got pretty blasted. Settled down to a presentation by BG Japanese presentation with a Japanese fund manager. Worst mistake? Selling stock too soon! I guess we have all done that. More good news from CNIC keeping the stock bubbling away, yet moe upgrades and another small acquisition. Otherwise pretty flat.
Western Governments seem to be a little sceptical about Russian retreat. I suppose they are the ones doing the war mongering and not keen to end up with egg on face . I think Rasputin was just feeling a bit lonely so wanted some people to come and chat to him. Bit heavy handed way of asking. They are all insecure, insane and desperate to be top dog and would sell their own grandmothers, daughters etc to stay that way
typo 'for made up information'
