RE: Boulby (ICL)1 Jun 2018 11:28
I am sure that all shareholders who live within commuting distance of Boulby hope that they continue to mine into the future. Boulby has provided a good income for many locals, my family included, for many years.
I understand that corrosion is a suignificant problem with much of the infrastructure. The costs involved with transitioning to Polyhalite and the cost of dealing with the corrosion, are not insignificant. But then, the costs of building a new mine and the tunnel etc., are hardly chickenfeed.
Most of the people I talk to who work or have worked at Boulby pin much of the miness hopes on a Sirius buyout. ICL have other assets that are more profitable.
I cannot rule a buyout. It may form some kind of sweetener for the Treasury guarantee. But I trust our BOD to only do a deal if it is in the best interests of Sirius.
Personally, I would like to see the mine site returned to a condition befitting that of a National Park. But only when the mine is no longer viable.
Any future planning applications by Boulby may well struggle if a mine near Whitby is producing 20m tonnes.
