Right-to-buy sold our grandchildren’s future homes to those who could afford it. The dream of home ownership is becoming a distant dream for a generation (and even worse for generations yet to be born). They can’t even rent a council house because baby their parents and grand parents bought them in a half price Tory vote-grabbing sale. Many of lucky buyers remain in houses that are far too large for them in their later years. Family homes with spare rooms let on AirBnB while 30 year olds live in cramped flats.

It is not right.

As for Gordon’s gold sell-off. Perhaps some of the proceeds went to fund PFIs started by you know who.

Gordon Brown’s selling of the nation’s gold (at market prices) pales into insignificance when compared with Thatcher’s selling of the family silver (utility companies and the council housing stock for example). This project is seeking a Treasury guarantee. Sirius pay HMG a sum of money in return for the guarantee. If the project goes to plan, HMG profit from providing the insurance policy in the form of a guarantee and no public money is used.

If the project fails, HMG pay to cover the costs spent to the point of failure.

There is no question of the state funding the mine build. All that is being sought is a treasury-backed guarantee in exchange for a fee. A bit like a PPI policy.

I’m investing because I think the mine will be built.

I am hoping that Stage 2 is 100% debt with a Treasury guarantee for much of the debt. But I know how Civil Servants and Ministers work and cannot be 100% confident that HMG will be forthcoming with the guarantee. We all know that they should but they like to play at Dragons Den.

What the public and other businesses think plays an important role. I expect ICL and other potash producers will be lobbying MPs to block a guarantee. We know there are dark forces in Natural England, the National Trust and NYMPA, amongst others, who have had their noses put out of joint when PP was approved.

I hope HMG do the right thing and support this world class project.

Most of the opposition to the mine was based on the perceived role of the National Park. In their hearts they knew that this was too big to stop. It is similar in so many ways to what the park is. It has So much mining and industrial heritage.

I could see Boulby selling their polyhalite to Sirius for it to be ground to dust and formed into pellets. This would make their raw product more saleable to a market that will be about ten times their capacity. It’d be great if both companies could survive. It would mean that Sirius’s profit margin would be significantly higher than that of ICL. But if ICL could survive at Boulby then that would another boost for jobs in the area.

I think ICL’s actions pre planning and more recently do not bode well for any joint working between the two companies. We should remember that Boulby supplied the raw materials for Sirius’s trials.

Poly4 may well be a premium product at SOP prices.
