It's an absolute bargain and the company is saying/paying for you to load up while it's cheap:

In the past 16 years, since 2005, the share price has only been lower than this for 4 complete months, during covid. For the other 188 months (16*12 (-4)) it has been considerably higher. There's a gap on the 1 hour chart at 122.3p ish. It's looked like it's been trying to fill it for ages, hopefully that will happen soon and we can move up to fill the higher gap at 135p.

Because short sellers have money on deposit to cover the position. If the share price goes up and losses reach the value of the deposited cash then they get a margin call and the position is automatically closed so that all the deposited funds are lost. So you can never be exposed for more cash than you have on deposit in your account.

It's the final dividend so it has to be proposed by the board at the AGM and if approved by shareholders then it becomes legally binding. The situation you describe is correct for interim payments but it's not the case for the final dividend.

chique - I'm talking about risk management for a 60 yo old man, imo it's not appropriate for him to punt every penny he owns in here. There's always too much uncertainty with any one company for that, especially this one at this time..

A distressed sp would be indicative of ongoing difficulties, so you wouldn't expect the same level of dividend with that level of uncertainty about the future.
