President Donald Trump has called for the "termination" of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell in a dispute over interest rates, cutting across the political independence of the U.S. central bank.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump noted that the European Central Bank (ECB) is expected to cut interest rates again, and suggested Powell should be doing the same, calling him "always TOO LATE AND WRONG".

"Oil prices are down, groceries (even eggs!) are down, and the USA is getting RICH ON TARIFFS," Trump wrote. "Too Late should have lowered Interest Rates, like the ECB, long ago, but he should certainly lower them now.
