The IPO was open to ordinary punters and did not sell out in a hurry [it was done through Primary Bid]. I think too many ordinary punters have bought hoping to sell on the opening spike for there to be that spike.

True - but only if you can get in very early; the Market Makers are not dumb and will want every penny they can get out of the stock they hold. And who can blame them - they also get stung with nasty placings or other calamities now and then.

These companies often use the spike to raise funds, especially if they need to ramp up production capabilities. Seeing paper profits get burnt on the bonfire of greed is always annoying.
