In order to get elected Labour needed to match the Tories pledges not to raise VAT or taxes on working people; both parties will have known that they were stupid pledges to make [as was the promise not to seek to reverse Brexit which has turned into an act of financial self-harm].

Trust in politicians is low enough already, so they cannot do a reverse ferret on those pledges. Means testing all benefits makes sense; if I were to start looking for a job, I cannot claim jobseekers allowance as my bank balance is above the savings threshold.
