RE: Charity from miners27 Feb 2019 10:38
TigerByTheTail - please note this - " the vast majority of these are deaths that have occurred on their mine site by illegal miners operating in very unsafe conditions and dying through no 3rd party or ACA involvement. Other trespassers were killed in certain situations by heavy-handed police"-
Thanks for that information Visitor, and for your very informative posts.
There is a lot of misinformation out there. A few years ago, I heard a BBC Radio Four report on the harm being done to the environment by miners in Africa. The reporter told us that these were "informal" miners. How that for anti-capitalist propaganda and bias. They were illegal miners. Calling them "informal" is like saying that a burglar in your home is in "informal" visitor.
ACA was \ is a responsible caring company that has done a lot for the locals around its mines.
My view on miners giving charity is that the companies already pay enough to the host nations by way of licence fees, tax, wages and royalties. They ought to concentrate on making a profit and pay dividends, then it is up to the shareholders who receive those dividends.
If they wish to donate the money to charities that work in the host nations, the likes of Oxfam, UNICEF, Save The Children, etc. then that is their choice and that is how it ought to be. The miners should not be giving away our money to countries that already get billions of British foreign aid. African governments like to rake it in, but won't pay VAT refunds to which companies are entitled.
I am very frustrated as last year the SHG boards alluded to the possibility of divdends this year and it hasn't happened. I hope a dividend comes along soon, but perhaps that depends on the VAT refund being paid.
