"Chatgpt view, best is to combine them both as suggested: " of course. I don't just look at the chart.
I weigh up the company looking for medium to long term potential (if you wouldn't hold it for a year, then don't hold it for fifteen minutes, as they say), and I maintain a core holding, but nothing moves in a straight line so I use the chart to spot good opportunities for top ups or sales if I see a dip coming, or even sharp falls that weren't indicated in the fundamentals.
CNR was a notable one for me. Years ago when It was at about 53p, the chart suggested to me that a sharp fall was coming. I posted a warning on the CNR board and said that it would drop to about 42p or 43p. Of course I got a lot of abuse and was told that TA doesn't work.
When it fell to 42p I got a lot more abuse. They hate it when a forecast of a drop is proved right. That shows you the mindset of the sort of people you get on these boards. Also, when I post a forecast of a rise, that never gets abuse, but when it turns out to be correct, they deny that the charts indicated the rise was due. So they say it doesn't work, but when it works they say it was just coincidence.
So, CNR was down to 42p. I had been selling on the way down.
I looked at the chart again and it indicated another sharp drop on the way. I posted another warning and they went wild. I was an idiot, the drop is over-done, this is going to 60p.
I sold my entire holding. It started to slide and eventually dropped to 15p.
