RE: Government talks - Wealth Tax28 Oct 2022 10:22
Mommur,
"I am raging at the television most mornings with Labourites demanding an increase in the wealth tax.."
That was me last night, got to the point where I was using words aloud I very rarely use ?$%!!@.
The reporting was once more so skewed this only added to my frustration. Problem is, next few weeks more majors will be reporting too so media and Labour will have field-day upon field-day. I would like to know how HMRC verify the accounting 'accuracy' for likes of Chevron or CNOOC for UK tax also BP / Shell etc for that matter !!! Always the easy targets, likes of SQZ that get hit first and hardest.
Lets hope levy remain as is and Hunt, hunts down likes of energy providers / utilities ie EDF et al who profit from selling electricity from solar, wind, hydro, nuclear etc, commodity traders and banks. There is only so much blood you can take from any one stone.
Unfortunately I think Hunt / Sunak may end up tinkering with current set up to quell Labour's rants and public perception, probably by reducing tax allowance as that to me would be a quick fix but would do nothing to secure UK energy security going forward, quite the opposite. Thing is, likes of BP / Shell will probably will still pay little to no tax no matter how high taxation level is set as their army of accountants will ensure this.
Even friends I know go on about tax not paid by these giants, which, needless to say, I then go on to inform them of the real situation !
Somehow I don't think this will be the last we hear of Labour / Media et al on this matter !!!!
Regards
