Terraplane. Well said. Those of us who experienced all of this as BT employees are far positioned better to understand the in’s and out’s of the last 40 odd years. You would have thought that someone who, claimed they were a supplier to BT, would understand the company’s history. Possibly they were not as important a supplier as they would wish us to believe, or perhaps BT was just one of many companies they supposedly supplied, and BT did not pay what the supplier hoped they would compared to others. As pointed out, many of the staff that have a company van garaged at there home address will be on some form of availability outside there contracted 36 hrs a week. Some will be on a formal paid rota, likely covering one week in four, others on a voluntary basis. Those on a rota may well attend out of hours on the periods they are not formally obliged to. If working a 3 or 4 or 5 day week there will always be a number of days in any given 7 day period when the vehicle is potentially not used but may be needed outside of scheduled hours. How do you propose that those who are not available for out of hours attendances get the vehicle to another location for someone else to use, get a taxi.

One of the advantages of having staff garage at home is flexible working hours. Dependent on there roll they will pick up work before there scheduled start time and leave for there first task before there scheduled hours start, ie travel in there own time. The same can apply at the end of the day, arriving home after there scheduled hours have ended and without any additional pay. The only way to share a vehicle is if it is parked a a BT premises and not at a home location. The problem with that is you need another person performing the same roll, living relatively near by, say 5-10 miles who also does not garage at home, works a pattern that allows the two people to not work on the same day. Most who choose not to work from home have less flexible start and finish times so need to be leaving there last job at a pre determined time to allow them to get back to base at an acceptable finish time.

On average across most field rolls, the person garaging at home will complete more tasks in any given week than those working out of a base. This is due to them traveling early and late outside of scheduled hours, effectively on site for the first task around the time the person at a base starts traveling to there first task. At the end of the day it is more efficient to have staff garaging at home than at a BT premises, and a far more flexible workforce.

If you actually understood what the average BT field engineer needs to achieve in there roll on a day to day basis, this would be common sense. If you just see a spreadsheet and have no understanding of what the cost of a vehicle is against the real world of efficiency and productivity, then perhaps you should open your eyes and consider why it is the way it is…

Van’s. What a lot of tosh. Firstly if it is deemed necessary for an employee to have transport to perform there roll, then that vehicle becomes part of the cost to employ that individual. Just the same as tools, training, health and safety equipment, communication equipment, etc.

You can’t simply imply that because a vehicle, appears, to spend a lot of time idle that it is an unnecessary cost. The individual may work a 3 day week, 4 day, 5 day, or other pattern. Many will be on callout of some decryption, therefor the vehicle will be needed 24/7/365.

Vehicle share has been tryed in the past, the logistics simply do not work for 95% of job roles.

It’s a cost simple, if there is a way to reduce it that doesn’t impact on the productivity of an individual, then it will already have been done.

There are a few who, pop up, now and then but only when there is a bit of a dip in the SP, or what they consider very negative news for BT. SK. You are a rather depressing chap. Often wondered why a few individuals have to constantly live in doom n gloom, must say a lot for how there life is in the real world.

PRK1. Vodafone only have a core UK network to provide services over. There are some locations that they have a direct link into a customer’s site, but these are big businesses such as data centers . For all other services for the majority of customers they use Openreach to give service to site. Therefore any BB type of service is delivered over BTs network. As for Virgin they only supply BB and there TV services over there own network which gives them a geographical limitation. BTs network has a full nationwide coverage by either copper or fiber, Vodafone and Virgin do not have that advantage. If a customer leaves EE for say Sky or Vodafone then it will be delivered over BTs network therefore providing revenue for BT as well as the chosen provider eg Vodafone. Network is king.

Back in the days of analog services in telecommunications there was an occasional interference on a line that was annoying and caused disruption to normal service. It was called induced noise. One of its causes was another service that basically was to loud and it became induced into the normal service. Once identified it was easy to cure, turn the offending service down until it was no longer heard. Normal service was then restored and everyone was happy. Sound familiar…

There have been many reincarnations over the last few years. As time has passed the situation has slowly become worse, what started a few years ago as some banter has recently turned into directed insults to any person who dose not agree with the rhetoric now posted. It would appear that there investment in BT was flawed from the start apparently a high purchase price which has since fallen by some 75%. Yet they are happy to denigrate anyone else’s investment strategy simply because it doesn’t comply with there thinking. The constant insults towards BT engineering staff, simply because the poster thinks they are below the posters status in life and therefore inferior. The likely fact is that many engineers are better educated than the poster and certainly better qualified. They claim they used to be, a supplier, to BT but have never backed this up by indicating in what area this was, perhaps, manufacturing, technology, training, support services, just nothing to indicate they actually have something to bring to any topic. No doubt they will claim a NDA stops them, but that doesn’t stop them giving some generalized background and therefore informed comments on some topics. Then there are there heroes, Gav Patterson, Boris, Liz Truss, and most recently Donny Trump. Now there’s a selection of exemplary people. The man who lied to the late Queen, then the police, then parliament and then ran away instead of accepting his punishment from parliament. The woman who crashed the UK economy and lasted less than 2 months in the job. Lastly a convicted felon, a grifter, probably the biggest supplier of Fake news in history yet he has managed to con millions in the US by his falsehoods. No doubt they will realize the error of there ways when it’s to late. So the question is, is the poster a person of substance with principles or simply an attention seeker with nothing of substance to say at all.

Well done Billy, similar to mine. Sold some in September for £1.50 100% profit and dividend income as well. Feel sorry for some who paid a lot more and keep going on about what a poor company BT is, but they still invested, then say the management has been poor for many many years…

Good bit of political rhetoric in there. But your headline comments do not stand up in the real world. When I recive my state pension I will not get the full pension but a reduced one. I have 39 years contributions but as I took early retirement and therefor have not paid NI for the past few years, you have to keep paying to get the full rate at present. Second, I am in your age range that are not in full time employment,but I do not recive any benefits, it’s false to say those not working all put up the benefits cost. Since retirement we have lived on my company pension and our savings and investments. Please get real, there are many thousands of people like me who are not working but also do not cost the government anything…

AimMaster? You clearly have very little understanding of the telecoms industry in the UK or BT as a business. You complain about the debt, but as pointed out by others, that is to rollout FTTP & 5g for the whole of the country, unlike nearly all the Altnets who concentrate on geographical hot spots or rural areas funded partly by gigabit vouchers from the government. Sky choosing to use an additional network provider to assist In take up of there services by those who want it but due to there current broadband availability is purely copper based at present on BTs network. That’s not competitive it’s simply additional coverage if customers want to use it via Cityfiber.

Back in the late 2000s when we had the financial crash one of the things that people decided they still needed as a basic to modern life was there broadband and mobile phone. There were fears in BT at the time that that would not be the case causing a drop in income and job losses. The exact opposite happened revenue and customers stayed in place and BT even added additional staff during that period. So your claims of people dropping there BB or mobile are false and BT offers a budget BB via Plusnet for those who wish to reduce cost. Add on products such as BT sport or even Sky tv are more likely to get dropped rather than the basic connectivity via BB or phone. BTs costs are reducing year on year as the upgrade work rolls out, staff reductions, building lease, energy costs, network maintenance costs all are and will continue to reduce. The bottom line for you is, you don’t understand the telecoms industry .

The Sky thing was just a lot of noise, and some misleading comments in the press that made it sound like BT are to loose a high number of customers. Once you started to read the articles it became clear that there would be some losses in geographical hotspots where both have fiber coverage. But the move is designed to provide fiber access where BT currently has no FF coverage and is not planed for some time, some of City’s rural build is funded by the Gigabit government scheme. SP is now starting to return to where it was , lots of so called experts getting there nickers in a twist about something they didn’t really understand at the time.

Sky are simply hoping to get some additional geographical coverage for its streaming products. Clearly Cityfibre has the network coverage that BT has not yet reached, but will in the future. It was not that long ago when Sky were being linked to VM/02, obviously there was something Sky did not like about that possibility quite likely that VM and BT covered the same locations with fiber, Sky already had coverage with BT, they are simply going for a provider offering coverage that they need, at present. Time will tell but it is not likely to cause BT to many losses for quite a while as they do not yet have the fibre coverage. In locations where the two both have fiber there may be some competition. What this will likely do is cause other Altnets to fold sooner.

Information for pensions and tax for BT personal which also gives general information for DC and DB scheme for other employers. In the past Wealth at work also provided a personal 1 to 1 free of charge, May still be available to employees, not sure. Worth working for a big company, they support there workforce in so many ways such as these retirement services free of charge, no having to work it out for yourself , and if you are a BTPS member then no tax on your chosen lump sum and a choice of how you manage how large or small you want it to be depending on weather you want high or low income payments on r you take it. No brainier…

Yes other operators have closed networks for there own geographical locations but need BT to provide interconnection to access other networks that there customers will want to connect to.If you live in Hull and have Kingston as your BB provider how else can Kingston connect you to say Virgin to access a customer they provide network access to in a given geographical area. Text from your 3 phone to an EE phone. Use your BT landline to call a land line provided by Vodafone. Just as the river Severn flows into the Bristol Channel which then flows into the Atlantic then onwards to the Pacific.

Magic. Simple answer is, anyone accessing the internet, sending a text, or making a phone call, business connecting locations, gathering data on behalf of customers or accessing remote sites. No matter who the service is initially sourced from, at some point it will be transported over some element of BTs network, therefore generating income.
