If Samsung come knocking on Nanoco's door, I think they'll be happy to do business, but I suspect they're more likely to trade via one of the major customers Nanoco are currently working with.

Let's count the chickens when/if they hatch.

A cheaper Vision headset from Apple is no light undertaking, Apple don't seem keen on forsaking OLED on silicone as the main screen source, and supply of these remains a huge bottleneck. BOE have an OLED on silicone screen, and I suspect can produce it more cheaply and plentifully than Sony.

Sony cannot produce more than 1m screens a year according to published accounts, and don't seem over keen to expand at this stage.

Apple did have issues with BOE quality control when they looked to them for iphone screens. They may be willing to take a chance if they can supply something they cannot get elsewhere.

All this may be moot to Nanoco's business case if the headset doesn't use the sensors.

Nanoco doesn't require revenge, it requires trade.

Competitors in the same space like Meta, Sony, Samsung, Google and Microsoft etc. will be buying these to forensically strip them down and analyse every part. I think it's only a matter of time before demand starts to scale, but there is a risk that it may require lead-free materials to attract wider demand, we will have to wait and see.

This all assumes the Vision Pro is using QD sensors to begin with. What other technology offers the same level of perfomance?

I haven't seen any evidence to support that. Certainly they've been producing a limited quantity for developers, and the initial launch but the amount is very low.

If the Vision Pro isn't using Qd-enhanced sensors what are they using for iris recognition, and how have Apple got such a high level of accuracy with their sensor suite when compared with existing competition.

How do you also align the constantly shifting deadline, and also the low volume of product expected which has shrunk further with the lower volume of Vision Pro's expected in the first year of production?

Metalenz may well use the dots, but production is not expected for a while yet, and there's no guarantee they will use QD's. Other Metalenz/STMicro TOF sensors using this tech are not using QD's currently, so they may not require it at this stage. we'll see.

I still think Vision Pro is the first device off the blocks.

No idea. Perhaps it's more difficult/costly or doesn't apply so readily with materials at a more humble stage in the supply chain? If Nanoco themselves were unaware of this strategy, I'm certain the funders and legal team were, and would have advised accordingly.

As regards TH's team, as I recall they were advising suing the pants of anyone and everyone, but as has been exposed quite recently, there isn't a huge amount out there to go after. So wise to treat their strategies with some caution.

That was Jonathan Steckel. He's a scientist not a salesman. The link didn't say they weren't a customer, it just said the materials hadn't appeared in a product yet. Deliberately ambiguous IMO.

The statement can mean many things including the materials are still not commercially available as a product in the shops, but are being used in demo/pre-production models. He'd almost certainly be breaking confidentiality clauses if he divulged Apple were using QD's via STMicro.

I would expect any meetings/negotiations to be with the companies Nanoco are directly dealing with. If Apple turn putto be in the loop, their negotiations are more likely to be with STMicro.

Anyone looked at the Metalenz PolarID. Metalemz are partnered with STMicro, and all their TOF sensors are now using metalens technology. Might not necessarily require QD’s, by definitely using the IR spectrum, and with increased resolution, that may require QD’s. Not on the market yet, but sampling. Perhaps new year? This would be huge if it uses Nanoco QD’s.

Think it's more to do with investors being a bit lemming-like rather than trust.

Didn't expect to get any detail about Vision Pro at Apple's results. Doubtful we'll learn anything much until it's launched in the new year, and that's assuming it's using Nanoco/STMicro tech.

Bit of FOMO going on in the market after LOAM's increased holding. Hopefully not too much longer before we get that important contract RNS.

At least it may quieten down a few who keep questioning why the big II's aren't throwing their cash in.

No, but Nanoco isn't necessarily going to be privy to any discussion between STMicro and Apple. It's just speculation on my part, but there has been an almost paranoid amount of secrecy surrounding this contract.

I found it strange when STMicro were initially named but then subsequently referred to as the European customer, which smacked more of Apple's involvement.

I'll be surprised if there is anything beyond what they've presented up until now.

My hunch is that the sensor technology used in the Vision Pro represents a very large part of the advance over competitors, which is why so few details are available about them.

The rest of the unit, perhaps aside from the R1 processor, is based on relatively mature technology. The R1 is a very fast processor used to gather all the information presented by the sensor suite, within a 13ms processing window. Qualcomm seem to have something that can match it with their snapdragon XR chipsets. Qualcomm are allegedly releasing a faster XR chipset in the new year.

In the last Nanoco update they said that the validation of materials was waiting on the European customer's customer. Which unless it was a slip of the tongue suggests at present there is only one buyer for these sensors at present.

Have Apple agreed an exclusive supply contract with STMicro to give them a headstart over competitors?

They've been expecting things for some months now. If I hire someone to do a job for me, and they come recommended, I would expect they'll do a decent job for me. Doesn't mean they will though.

When we see an RNS that says contract signed for delivery of materials to European customer, then we're in play, not before.

If these dots are going into the Vision Pro, then it can't be much longer if Apple are sticking to an early 2024 date for commercial release, simply from a logisitics perspective, dots will have to made, shipped from UK to STMicro probably a European facility, applied to the CMOS sensors, then shipped to China for assembly in the device, then shipped to the USA for sale. Quite a round trip.

Hasn't been an RNS. Company said they would issue one when they have a contract signed. Expectation or not, we and the company are still waiting.
