On the Battle of Britain I am sorry to deflate a few illusions but most of the story is a myth, I know some will reel in horror , but it was, propaganda to get the the free world on our side and to bolster the home fronts moral.
We never had just a few aircraft we had plenty and plenty of pilots.
There was such a shortage of pilots that they never took any from bomber command or coastal command or even the civilian pilots who were still flying to neutral countries . The RAF squadrons were larger than German squadrons , RAF squadrons had spare pilots, pilots were rotated with days off and were given leave on a regular basis . Most of the aerial fighting took place over the South East, Squadrons were rotated into the area and out to quieter parts of the country. The Germans however got little leave they flew more often than RAF pilots and suffered more anxiety due to this. People should read up some serious history and not depend on war time propaganda pushed out to make it look as if the Germans could have invaded, they could not have the means.
German propaganda about invading Great Britain was a rouse to divert Russian eyes, the so called landing craft that the Germans assemble, were actually river barges most had no engines, no protection no ramps no nothing. So a thousand barges were to be towed across the seas with what and the Home Fleet was stationed ready to blast them to pieces . Britain was so short of aircraft that when Russia was invaded we sent them fighters and tanks !
People go on about the Poles, they did not save us, we went to war because they were invaded not the other way around, they never cared when Germans invaded other countries, as no one did, not he Dutch, Belgians, the Danes, the Swedes, the Southern Irish and not lets forget the great USA the isolationist nation. On propaganda, according to Churchill Dunkirk was a victory ! According to Charles de Gaulle the French liberated themselves with a little help from the Allies. And the American myth that Omaha was the most costly and bloody beach again is just a myth. Juno Breach where mostly Canadians landed was just as bloody . The Americans at Utah beach had very few casualties and so no films are made about that sector by Hollywood . And there was no massive concrete blockhouse on Omaha Beach, it was a seaside hotel !
Most of the German troops manning the first line of defence along the Normandy coast were made up of foreign troops from POLAND and Russia along with second rate German units . Myths die hard.
