On today's necessities, those that one could do without I would say we're a generation issue, I could live easily without certain things, that we take for granted now.
The younger you are the more dependent on the modern world you will be. I like most my age grew up with what would now be called basic things in life, my parents could have coped with less, because they were brought up with very much less, in all things including food. An interesting theory is that the private car is a luxury, before the internal combustion engine came into being a horse was a luxury. There was a time when bicycles, and riding on a bus or train were deemed a luxury available only to the few. An independent Scotland would join the EU, so be governed in reality by Brussels.

One can guess that independent Scotland would wish to have some military defense pact with England and Wales.
So I can see how the status quo could remain, an Independent Scotland that was not that independent in reality.
One expects this independent country would want an open border with England, which could not be allowed for some obvious reasons.
