But you are correct, but the description should read intellectually elite. The elite universities mirror the old Army Regiments, when you bought your commission those with deep pockets and family connections, went into the Guards Regiments the others just rifle regiments. The most prestigious Cavalry regiments had the thickest officers, they put the idiots in the cavalry, seriously, Churchill and Haig both went into the cavalry because they could not pass the simple maths tests at Sandhurst.

The tragedy is gullible and, lazy people believed all that the corrupt, incompetent establishments told them because it suited them. Why did Frau Merkel not promise paradise if Germans would just keep voting her? Our own Gordon Brown did not promise to end boom and bust he said he had done it. Blair said only between 5000 to 13000 East Europeans would move here, and he promised that Saddam had weapons that could wipe us out in 45 minutes. Two examples from how many?. Putin promised his people a speedy special operation in Ukraine!
As I said a couple of days ago, my wife's cousin liked Boris because he made her laugh! and she is not alone. I will not bother voting for any of the main parties, I can't remember our political class being so completely void of any talent. You may not have agreed with what the parties said or stood for, but they did have some people with some intellect and experience of what they did stand for. The Tory party once had some business people in it, the Labour party had people who had done some labour, and the Liberals had academics from what the aboriginals call "dreamland".
Now they are just peas from the same pod.

I have been to Scotland, the old WW2 prisoner of war camp at Comrie in the Highlands, when I was in the TA many years back. We were dismantling an old railway bridge for the local Laird, who was too tight to pay for it to be done himself.
Spent 13 days breaking it up, cutting it into sections, and replacing it with a footbridge across the river.
80 men and at the end of the job the tight-fisted Scottish Twot, sends 8 cans of beer for the whole company, bet he had a laugh. The best road was the one back to England, never been there since.
