Ah, just read the 2nd RNS. The NICE MIB was initiated before the PALOH study publication. I think the PALOH study puts any doubts to rest! This will be part of standard care in every neonatal unit in the developed world in due course.

The NICE guide was excellent as these things go. It is supposed to include any potential negative aspects. On balance, it was extremely positive with 2 clear cheerleaders in the panel.

The comment from the one doubter is a bit odd though because the whole point of the PALOH study was to address this in real-world clinical use - which it did very emphatically. I wonder if they made their comments purely on the technical accuracy studies and hadn't considered the recent PALOH study - it can happen.

"Justification: In FY22 JHBI will procure the Genedrive for DR-SKO (NGB 57, USAF 85) and the Three-9 for JBTDS (NGB 19, USMC 25). FY22 will also fund fielding and program management support."

What is new is that it has been published in the most eminent pediatric journal, and American at that. Every relevant clinician will now be aware of this. And we already know from the author that there has been global interest.

People who have not watched the talk, really should. Newman’s excitement is palpable. Once the revenue starts coming in from AIHL - imminently, we could use the technology for all sorts of other genetic point of care diagnostics. He mentioned blood thinners, anaesthetics, opioids and wider GP prescribing…

Testing for genetic mutations before prescribing, will be the future of medicine. We've proved it in a clinical setting. The potential is huge. AIHL is just the tip of the iceberg! I can't wait for the paper due out any day now.

This Radio 4 programme by Tim Harford is well worth a listen for those interested in Covid-19 and vaccines vs testing.

At around 7.00 minutes, a professor of medicine at Texas, who is involved in vaccine production, explains that many are becoming complacent about testing because of the availability of vaccines. However, he thinks cases in the US, which had began to decline, will go up due to new variants.

He has "suggested to the Biden administration that one mutation is all it takes to change everything vis-a-vis vaccines, and the Biden administration is listening" to him with respect to increasing virus genomic sequencing and testing.

Testing is not going away. If nothing else, its how you measure if vaccination is working and for how long. It is inconceivable that mass testing will not carry on for another couple of years at least.
