Thanks for doing my job Fleccy!
Direct to cell service launched in US partners with other telcos for business reasons (lengthy list below from grok). Ground towers aren’t needed, but while coverage ramps up, the phone could switch to a ground towers aren’t needed for better reception.
Currently there are barely 300 DTC sats in orbit. The target I think is 30000. A threat to watch grow.
Starlink Direct to Cell partners with telecommunications companies for several strategic reasons:
1. **Spectrum Allocation**: Telecom companies often have access to licensed spectrum which is crucial for providing cellular service. Starlink needs this spectrum to legally transmit signals from satellites to cell phones.
2. **Existing Infrastructure**: Telecom companies have established networks and billing systems that can integrate with Starlink's service for seamless user experience. This includes customer support, billing, and network management systems that are already in place.
3. **Market Access**: By partnering with telecoms, Starlink can quickly reach an existing customer base. Telecom companies have established relationships with millions of subscribers, providing an immediate market for the service without the need for Starlink to build its own customer acquisition from scratch.
4. **Regulatory Compliance**: Navigating the complex landscape of telecommunications regulations is easier with local partners who already understand and are compliant with national laws and regulations. Telecom partners can help ensure that Starlink's service meets local regulatory requirements.
5. **Service Integration**: For consumers, integrating Starlink's satellite service into existing mobile plans or offerings makes the service more accessible and less disruptive to their current communication habits. This includes the ability to roam between terrestrial networks and satellite networks seamlessly.
6. **Emergency Services**: Telecom partners can leverage Starlink's service to provide emergency communications in areas without traditional cellular coverage, enhancing public safety and service reliability.
7. **Commercial and Business Strategy**: These partnerships allow Starlink to focus on its core competency - satellite technology - while telecoms handle the consumer-facing aspects of the service. It's a symbiotic relationship where both parties can expand their service offerings, potentially tapping into new revenue streams like rural connectivity or maritime communications.
8. **Global Expansion**: By working with multiple telecom companies globally, Starlink can expand its service coverage internationally more efficiently, using the partners' local market knowledge and infrastructure.
These partnerships are vital for bringing Starlink's Direct to Cell service to market in a way that is both technically feasible and commercially viable. The collaboration leverages the strengths of each entity to provide a service that could eliminat
