President Cyril Ramaphosa is in Brussels today to meet European Union leaders. Back home, he has been busy trying to clean up the mess left by his predecessor Jacob Zuma. Mr Ramaphosa earlier this month fired Tom Moyane, the head of the revenue service and a Zuma ally, for mismanagement. This week the flamboyant home-affairs minister, Malusi Gigaba, accused of facilitating corruption under Mr Zuma and other misbehaviour, was forced to quit. A new head of public prosecutions is due to be appointed, replacing the abysmal previous director. This has boosted confidence in Mr Ramaphosa’s efforts to root out rot, and thereby boost investment in South Africa, one of the key topics of his EU summit agenda. His overall goal is to attract $100bn over five years. But any sums offered will be slow to turn into improvements for ordinary South Africans. For that, the slow-growing domestic economy needs to become unstuck.
