The science to which the cited paper refers is way over my head, however the point seems to be that the alkanes and most benzenes which are most of petroleum's content are not water-soluble, while other organic compounds contained are soluble, and some of these "crown esters" can hugely increase the yield and speed of osmotic separation of lithium from brines. They could be more easily obtained from waste well water than from the petroleum. I can't say what quantity is required, and we don't have a monopoly of waste water (hi ukog!), but anything that finds a use for waste has got to be good.
