ICC seeks arrest warrant against Netanyahu, Gallant, Hamas top leaders20 May 2024 13:04
International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim Khan filed applications on Monday for arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
According to the statement issued by Khan, based on the evidence collected and examined, there is reason to believe that both representatives bear "criminal responsibility" for "war crimes and crimes against humanity." These crimes include the starvation of civilians as a method of warfare, willfully causing great suffering or serious injury to the body or health, willful killing, intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population, persecution as a crime against humanity, and other inhumane acts as crimes against humanity.
"Israel, like all States, has a right to take action to defend its population. That right, however, does not absolve Israel or any State of its obligation to comply with international humanitarian law," the prosecutor said in its statement. Along with the Israeli officials, the prosecutor issued a similar order against the Head of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar; the Commander-in-Chief of Al-Qassam Brigades, Mohammed Diab Ibrahim Al-Masr; and the Head of Hamas Political Bureau, Ismail Haniyeh.
