United Nations Human Rights Chief Volker Turk declared on Monday that Israel's complete blockade of the Gaza Strip is in violation of international law and is considered "prohibited."

"The imposition of sieges that endanger the lives of civilians by depriving them of goods essential for their survival is prohibited under international humanitarian law," he stated.

Turk's remarks followed Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant order to "complete siege" the Gaza Strip in response to Hamas' recent assault on Israel.
