That can be over a short period of time. There is one company that I saw some alarming signs about a few weeks ago. At the start of this week the were 500. They closed at 399 today. If you do some very basic research there is money to be made. Again in this companies case it is the inability to manage debt that is the problem. Should someone feel guilt because they have benefited from the poor performance of very highly paid execs? Absolutely not.
If "investors" that have gone long in distressed companies, they would direct there anger towards the board, not shorters and they would take an active role in voting for remuneration etc.
And a final point on shorting, should people feel grubby about benefitting from short positions? Well chances are they have pensions, so chances are they have benefited from the work of shorting hedge funds.

A point of detail, when a company goes into administration, the administrators (not the Bod) have a responsibility to look after creditors. They don't have an responsibility for shareholders, per say.

And a final point SJ- there is a lot more repect to be had from the likes of yourself who are playing a very high risk game by buying at the bottom, with the intention of getting out on a spike.
You have a much more honest approach than the clowns that have been berating anyone with a bear argument, just because they have got themselves by refusing to sell with the trend. They are no more investors that the claim to be, they are traders, the same as you and I.

Just to clarify, over at IRV a short squeeze was being predicted for months. Now, a huge spike did occur days before it went into administration (dead cat bounce), but, by then the shorts had already closed out, so it was a spike but not a short squeeze.

SJ, yeah, i take what your saying, but you have misinterpreted me, a spike could occur without the shorts closing and then drop back down again, in which case yes it has been a spike but not necessarily a short squeeze.

Yeah take your point, misinterpretation of news as being good, have seen before 150% plus jumps, only for companies to go pop a week later! Plenty of suckers skewered and writhing on the spike.....
What do you think accounts for the shorts not closing?

A short squeeze, with 10% shorts open would be nothing short of spectacular. But the fact that around 10% of all shares have been sold by II's just this week, coupled with the fact that the shorts have not reduced, despite ample opportunity, would suggest that a short squeeze is not on the cards. The shorters still think this has further to go, and the long II's are jumping ship.
